School holiday August 24: Are schools closed today due to heavy rain? Check state-wise updates
School holiday today, August 24: Odisha announces district closures amid heavy rain; check latest updates

Schools in several parts of India are facing heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon remains active across the country on Monday, August 24, 2026. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain in several states, with isolated areas of Odisha likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. There is no nationwide school holiday for August 24. However, school closures are being decided locally according to rainfall, flooding, waterlogging, landslides and road conditions. In Odisha, some district administrations have announced closures following heavy rain and weather warnings.

Odisha schools closed in affected districts

Odisha is among the states facing intense rainfall. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas, while warnings remain in force for several districts.Nabarangpur district administration has declared a holiday for all government-aided and private schools and Anganwadi centres on August 24 because of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning warnings.Reports have also confirmed school closures in other affected Odisha districts, with Kalahandi among the areas facing flooding concerns following heavy rainfall.

Rain forecast across other states

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, parts of the Northeast and southern India. Bihar is expected to receive isolated heavy rain from August 24, while Odisha remains under an extended period of heightened rainfall activity.Delhi-NCR is expected to see cloudy conditions and light rain at some places. No confirmed rain-related statewide school closure has been reported for Delhi.Similarly, no statewide closure has been confirmed for Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, Uttarakhand or Chhattisgarh based on the latest available updates.

How to check your school’s status

Parents and students should not treat an IMD weather warning as an automatic school holiday. Closure decisions are generally issued by the concerned district administration, education department or school authorities.Students should check their school’s official website, mobile application, WhatsApp group or notice board. They should also monitor verified district administration announcements for last-minute changes, particularly in areas affected by flooding, waterlogging or landslides.Where a district administration has issued a closure order, students should follow that notification and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.
