Chandra Grahan 2026 Do & Don’ts: Sutak Rules, Timing & Raksha Bandhan Guidelines
The final lunar eclipse of 2026 occurs on August 28. This eclipse will not be visible from India, so Sutak Kaal will not apply. Families in India can continue Raksha Bandhan rituals without eclipse-related restrictions. Astronomical calculations show the eclipse will be visible in the Americas and parts of Europe. The partial eclipse will be deep, with 96 percent of the Moon shadowed.

The last Chandra Grahan of 2026 will be visible on August 28, 2026, which also falls on Raksha Bandhan in India. This has raised questions about the 2026 Chandra Grahan Sutak Kaal, religious restrictions, food, worship, and Rakhi rituals. But there is an important detail for people living in India. The lunar eclipse won’t be visible in India, so Sutak Kaal will not be applicable here. Sutak is also labelled “not applicable” in Panchang calculations for several Indian cities.

Chandra Grahan 2026 Timing

According to astronomical calculations, the penumbral phase starts around 6:55 AM IST on August 28. Partial eclipse begins around 8:04 AM, with maximum eclipse occurring around 9:43 AM. The partial phase will end around 11:21 a.m., and the penumbral phase will end around 12:30 p.m.It will be a deep partial lunar eclipse everywhere. At the maximum eclipse, about 96 per cent of the Moon’s surface will be in the darker part of Earth’s shadow. It will be visible across North and South America, and parts of Europe and Africa.

What Is the Sutak Kaal Timing in India?

The Chandra Grahan on August 28 will not be visible from India; hence, there is no Sutak Kaal timing for the country. In the Hindu tradition, Sutak is observed for a lunar eclipse only in places where the main eclipse is visible. This means families in India do not have to start imposing eclipse-related restrictions hours ahead of the event just because there is an eclipse somewhere else.Sutak timings may vary by location. People not residing in India should check the local eclipse visibility and Panchang for their respective city.

What to Do During Sutak Kaal

In cases where the Sutak applies, the emphasis in traditional practice lies more on prayer and simplicity.·Chant a mantra or spend some time in silent prayer.·Remain covered during the restricted period.·The traditional method of cooking is to put Tulsi leaves into some cooked food before Sutak starts.·Pregnant women are traditionally advised to be careful.·After the eclipse, many families bathe and clean their prayer area and then continue with their usual worship.

What Should Be Avoided During Sutak?

As per traditional customs, people don’t cook or eat during Sutak, except for children, the elderly or the sick.Strict eclipse customs in households may also result in the suspension of temple rituals and idol worship. At this time, some families do not begin an important religious ceremony. These restrictions do not apply to the 28 August 2026 lunar eclipse in India under the normal Panchang rule, since the eclipse is not visible here.
