Lunar Eclipse on Raksha Bandhan 2026: Sutak Kaal Impact & India Visibility; Does Sutak Apply to Rakhi Rituals?
On August 28, 2026, Raksha Bandhan aligns with a partial lunar eclipse, but thankfully, it won’t be seen in India, meaning Soukt Kaal restrictions are off the table. Families can confidently engage in their customary Rakhi tying and spiritual practices. With Bhadra Kaal concluding before dawn, all morning rituals can proceed without interference, ensuring a joyous celebration of sibling bonds.

Raksha Bandhan 2026 and a partial lunar eclipse will occur on the same date, Friday, August 28, leading to confusion among families in India about whether they should avoid tying Rakhi due to Sutak Kaal. This lunar eclipse will not be visible in India; hence, the usual Grahan-related Sutak restrictions will not apply here.

What Time Is the Lunar Eclipse on Raksha Bandhan?

When timed in Indian Standard Time, the global eclipse phases will be in the morning and afternoon of 28 August.·Penumbral phase begins: 6:55 AM·Partial eclipse begins: 8:04 AM·Maximum eclipse: 9:43 AM·Partial phase ends: 11:21 AM·Penumbral phase finishes: 12:30 PMThe main partial stage lasts for about 3 hours and 16 minutes. But these are converted global timings, not an Indian viewing window. The calculations made by Panchang clearly indicate that the umbral and penumbral phases will not be visible in parts of India.

Does Sutak Kaal Apply in India?

There is no Sutak Kaal for this eclipse in India. In traditional Hindu practice, an umbral lunar eclipse is a time of religious restriction during which the eclipse is astronomically visible at the devotee’s location. The Sutak beginning and ending are not applicable to Indian cities, as checked per the Panchang. Therefore, Indian families need not stop puja, cooking, eating or performing the Raksha Bandhan ceremony on account of this particular Chandra Grahan.

Will the Eclipse Affect Rakhi Tying?

The lunar eclipse does not annul or restrict the performance of the Rakhi ceremony in India. The auspicious time for the Raksha Bandhan thread ceremony in New Delhi is from August 28, 5:57 AM to 9:48 AM.Purnima Tithi begins at 9:08 AM on August 27. Purnima Tithi Ends – 9:48 AM on August 28.The global partial eclipse technically begins at 8.04 AM IST, but since the eclipse is not locally visible, Indian devotees do not need to stop tying Rakhi at that time.

What About Bhadra Kaal on Raksha Bandhan?

The more appropriate restriction for Rakhi rituals in India should be Bhadra, not Sutak.According to Panchang calculations, Bhadra will end before sunrise on August 28 in Delhi, Greater Noida, Hyderabad, and many other cities in India. Thus, the morning Rakhi time remains free from any Bhadra- or eclipse-related Sutak restrictions.
