The results tell an encouraging story. India have won once, drawn three times and lost only to hosts Netherlands across five matches. More importantly, their defence has stood up impressively against some of the world’s strongest teams. England registered 20 shots and 12 penalty corners without scoring, while Australia also failed to breach India’s defence.

The major concern has been at the other end. India have created chances but struggled to turn them into goals, a problem that ultimately ended their semifinal hopes. Coach Sjoerd Marijne, however, believes the team has taken significant steps forward.

Germany present a particularly interesting challenge. They have scored 13 goals during the tournament and possess considerably more attacking firepower. They are also coached by Janneke Schopman, the former India head coach, who will know the team’s strengths and weaknesses.

For India, this match is about more than finishing fifth. A strong performance would reinforce their belief after a difficult period of rebuilding and provide momentum ahead of the Asian Games.

The stakes there will be considerably higher: winning gold would secure India a direct qualification place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. A positive finish in Amstelveen could therefore become the first step towards that bigger objective.
