Tamil film industry strike over OTT release dispute postponed: ‘Sardar 2’, ‘Demonte Colony 3,’ ‘Immortal,’ and other films get relief

A major disagreement over the theatrical-to-OTT release window has created fresh uncertainty in the Tamil film industry. The dispute began after the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Federation and the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association reportedly pushed for new films to arrive on streaming platforms only after completing an eight-week theatrical run. Producers were asked to provide an assurance on this condition before their films could be screened in theatres. The proposal, however, faced strong opposition from the producer bodies, who argued that such a rule was not followed in the same manner across other South Indian film industries.

Tamil film industry strike cancelled

The Tamil film industry has now received temporary relief after the proposed strike from September 1 was postponed. The Tamil Film Producers Council and the Tamil Film Active Producers Association had earlier announced that new film releases, shootings and post-production work would stop as a mark of protest. Following a meeting held in Chennai, the producer bodies decided to put the strike on hold after discussions with the Tamil Nadu government. Producers Council president Tamizh Kumaran said the government advised the industry to continue with the existing system until further discussions could find a solution.

Producers had opposed eight-week OTT release window proposal

The producer bodies had strongly objected to the proposed eight-week OTT window, calling the decision unacceptable as producers were allegedly not consulted before it was announced. As reported by Dinamalar, they also pointed out the financial pressure already faced by the industry, stating that a large number of films struggle to recover their investments every year. According to the producers, the industry reportedly suffers losses running into more than Rs 700 crore annually. They had therefore decided to stop new releases, shootings and post-production activities from September 1. The issue is expected to be discussed further with producers, distributors and theatre owners in the presence of the government.

September Tamil releases get breathing space after strike cancellation

The postponement of the strike is particularly important as several Tamil films are expected to arrive in theatres during September. Karthi’s ‘Sardar 2,’ Karthik Subbaraj’s ‘Dorothy’ starring Keerthy Suresh, Soori’s ‘Mandaadi,’ and Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi’s ‘Meesaya Murukku 2’ are among the films lined up for release. ‘Lenin Pandiyan,’ ‘Demonte Colony 3,’ and GV Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar’s ‘Immortal’ are also part of the upcoming release schedule. With the shutdown now postponed, the immediate threat to these releases has eased. But the bigger OTT window dispute is still hanging and the next round of talks becomes crucial for Tamil cinema and its future release plans.
