GST Council meeting on Sept 12: Easier registration, automated cancellations on agenda
GST Council meeting on September 12

The GST Council is set to meet in New Delhi on September 12, with simplification of GST registration for businesses passing on tax credit of more than Rs 2.5 lakh a month among other issues in focus. The 57th meeting of the council, chaired by Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state finance ministers, will be preceded by an officers’ meeting on September 11, according to an office memorandum circulated by the Council secretariat. The council is also expected to consider automation and other changes in the process of GST registration cancellation. At present, central GST formations and various state formations do not follow a uniform procedure for granting GST registration to large businesses that pass on credit exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh a month. This has created uncertainty among taxpayers. The meeting comes after a gap of more than a year. The 56th GST Council meeting was held on September 3-4, 2025, when the Centre and states decided on a major restructuring of GST rates and slabs. The revised structure came into effect from September 22, 2025, replacing the four slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, which had been in place since July 1, 2017. GST was changed to a two-tier structure of 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate reserved for ultra-luxury and sin goods. The council had also approved a simplified GST registration scheme for small and low-risk businesses at its September 2025 meeting. The scheme was rolled out from November 1.Small and low-risk applicants identified by the GST system through data analysis, or applicants who self-assess that their output tax liability does not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh a month, can opt for the scheme. The limit includes CGST, SGST/UTGST and IGST.About 1.68 crore businesses are currently registered under GST.
