'When a Tamil film attempts something fresh, give it love': Simbu backs ‘Modha Rathri’, urges producers to give small films 'that extra push' in theatres

Silambarasan has publicly extended his support to ‘Modha Rathri’, the Tamil rural comedy-entertainer that has been earning positive buzz since its release. In a social media post, the actor praised director Raja Karuppasamy’s storytelling and encouraged audiences to catch the film in theatres, while also raising a broader point about how the industry treats smaller films.

Silambarasan’s request to producers

The core of Silambarasan’s message centred on the visibility challenges faced by smaller films despite earning genuine appreciation for their content. “A small request to our producers too… films like these need that extra push to reach the audience. Good content deserves to be discovered,” he wrote. He also drew attention to a pattern he’s observed among Tamil audiences, noting that fresh, homegrown films often don’t receive the same enthusiasm reserved for acclaimed titles from other language industries.

Simbu on ‘Modha Rathri’s story and new team

Sharing his experience of watching the film, Silambarasan wrote, “Watched #ModhaRathri and really enjoyed it. We often discover small, beautiful films from other languages and celebrate them so much. When a Tamil film attempts something fresh with a new team, I feel we should give it the same love and support.” He went on to specifically praise the film’s writing and setting. “A story unfolding over a single night, set around a village wedding, with so many characters and little moments that felt so real. The writing, the humour and the characters were all handled really well,” he added, before congratulating director Raja Karuppasamy and the entire cast and crew for their work.

About ‘Modha Rathri’

Released in theatres on August 21, ‘Modha Rathri’ follows a village wedding that spirals into chaos through a series of misunderstandings and comic mishaps, all unfolding over the course of a single night. The film blends humour with emotional beats and unexpected twists. It marks the debut of Rishikanth as a leading man, opposite Anishma Anilkumar in the female lead role, with a supporting cast that includes Chetan, A. Venkatesh, Bucks, Abdool Lee and Shelly Kishore. With Silambarasan now personally endorsing the film, Modha Rathri has received a notable boost in visibility, arriving at a moment when conversations around supporting small, original Tamil cinema continue to gain traction.
