Dehradun schools, Anganwadi centres closed today amid heavy rain, lightning forecast

Dehradun has declared a one-day holiday for all government, private and non-government schools from Classes 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centres on Tuesday, September 1, after an Orange alert was issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall, lightning and spells of extremely heavy rain in parts of the district.The decision was taken by the District Magistrate and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Dehradun, as a precautionary measure.The order, issued on August 31, said the latest weather forecast and nowcast indicated the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall, lightning and extremely heavy rain in some parts of the district over the next 24 hours.The administration said the weather conditions could lead to untoward incidents. Educational institutions and Anganwadi centres have therefore been asked to remain closed for the day as part of disaster mitigation measures.

Who will be affected by the order?

The closure applies to all government, non-government and private schools in Dehradun district for Classes 1 to 12. Anganwadi centres will also remain closed on September 1.The Chief Education Officer and District Programme Officer, Dehradun, have been directed to ensure that the order is followed across the district.The holiday comes as parts of Uttarakhand continue to receive heavy rainfall, with the administration keeping a close watch on water levels and conditions in areas that could be affected by the weather.

Ganga water level rises in Rishikesh

Meanwhile, the water level of the Ganga in Rishikesh has risen amid continuous rainfall in the hilly areas of the Garhwal division, according to ANI.The river was flowing at a strong pace at Triveni Ghat. However, officials of the Central Water Commission said the water level remained normal and below the warning mark.Authorities have nevertheless stepped up monitoring along the river.Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Water Police and Disaster Relief Teams have been deployed at major ghats in Rishikesh, Muni Ki Reti and Lakshman Jhula.Loudspeaker announcements are also being made at the ghats, asking devotees, tourists and local residents to exercise caution while bathing in the Ganga.For schools and Anganwadi centres, Tuesday’s closure is currently a one-day measure.(with ANI inputs)
