Bank customers planning to step out for branch work on Friday should double-check their local holiday list first. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar, banks across a number of states and Union territories will remain closed on September 4 on account of Krishna Janmashtami, one of the most widely celebrated festivals marking the birth of Lord Krishna.The closure, however, is not nationwide. Bank holidays in India are notified state-wise and city-wise, which means a branch may down its shutters in one part of the country while continuing normal operations elsewhere.

As per the RBI list, Janmashtami-related closures on September 4 are expected to be observed in the following banking centres and states:

  • Gujarat
  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Odisha
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Uttarakhand
  • Telangana
  • Rajasthan
  • Jammu and Kashmir
  • Kerala
  • West Bengal
  • Bihar
  • Chhattisgarh
  • Jharkhand
  • Meghalaya
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Sikkim
  • Chandigarh

Bank holidays are also declared every second and fourth Saturday of the month, apart from all Sundays, in addition to the festival and state-specific closures through the year.

September 11: Banks will remain closed in Rajasthan due to elections in the jurisdiction of Jaipur Municipal Corporation.September 12: Banks in Assam will remain closed due to Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva.September 14: Banks will remain closed in Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Telangana, Goa, Andhra Pradesh due to Ganesh Chaturthi/Ganesh Puja/Vinayaka Chaturthi/Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vratham/Chaturthi.September 15: Banks will remain closed in Gujarat, Odisha and Goa due to Samvatsari (Chaturthi Paksha)/Nuakhai/Ganesh Chaturthi (2nd Day).September 21: Banks will remain closed in Assam and Kerala due to Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva/Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi.September 22: Banks in Jharkhand will remain closed due to Karma Puja.September 23: Banks in Jammu & Kashmir will see closures due to the Birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji.September 25: Banks will remain closed in Sikkim due to Indrajatra.Customers with urgent physical banking requirements, such as cheque deposits, locker access or document submission, have been advised to plan their visits in advance and confirm the status of their specific branch.However, the closure of physical branches will not affect digital banking services. Customers can continue to use UPI, internet banking and mobile banking apps for fund transfers and payments as they would on any other working day.ATMs are also expected to remain functional for cash withdrawals and other supported transactions.
