NEW DELHI: India won its first wrestling medal at the Asian Games 2026 after Sunil Kumar clinched bronze in the men’s Greco-Roman 87kg category on Wednesday.Sunil produced a dominant performance against the Philippines’ Callum Johnston Roberts, winning the bout 9-0 by technical superiority.Sunil did not allow Roberts to score a single point during the bout. The Indian wrestler picked up points throughout the contest before completing a comfortable victory.The win gave Sunil the bronze medal and opened India’s wrestling medal account at the Asian Games.Final score:Sunil Kumar (India) 9-0 Callum Johnston Roberts (Philippines)Sunil’s victory was recorded as a technical superiority win, with the opponent failing to score any point.Sunil had won a bronze in Hangzhou 2023 Games, ending a 13-year year wait for India for medal in the Greco Roman style.Before that Ravinder Singh and Sunil Kumar Rana had won bronze in 2010 Guangzhou Games.The 27-year-old Haryana wrestler was left to fight for a bronze medal after losing his semifinal by technical superiority to Japan’s Taizo Yoshida.
