Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 223 off 133 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history, and Rohit Sharma‘s 101 helped India chase down 406 against West Indies in the second ODI in Guwahati on Wednesday. India completed their highest successful chase in the format with 39 balls to spare, winning by eight wickets and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.India became only the second team to chase a target of 400 or more in men’s ODIs, after South Africa chased 438 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006. India finished on 406 for two in 43.3 overs after West Indies had posted their highest ODI total of 405 for seven.Gill remained unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls, hitting 26 fours and eight sixes, while Rohit scored 101 off 75 balls with 10 fours and six sixes. The opening pair added 255 runs for the first wicket, giving India a strong start to the chase.Gill’s innings was the highest individual score in an ODI chase and the highest by a captain in the format.The 27-year-old had to deal with cramps and a painful neck during his innings, but continued to take the Windies attack apart. He now has 11 ODI hundreds in 69 matches.Gill’s innings came alongside Rohit, the only other batter to have scored multiple double-centuries in ODIs.The conditions at Guwahati offered little help to the bowlers. However, batters still needed skill, discipline, intent, appetite and fitness to complete the chase. Gill’s innings provided all of that as India completed the second successful 400-plus chase in ODI history in only 43.3 overs.The conditions also put Kuldeep Yadav’s figures of 2-65 from 10 overs into context. Kuldeep became the second-quickest Indian to reach 200 ODI wickets during the match. Part-time off-spinner Naman Dhir conceded only 38 runs in 6.1 overs before leaving the field after getting injured.Earlier, centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo helped West Indies post their first 400-plus total in ODI cricket. Their 405 for seven surpassed their previous best of 389 against England in 2019.Campbell set the tone after West Indies were sent into bat, reaching his century in 65 balls. He scored 101 off 68 balls, with nine fours and five sixes, as West Indies took advantage of India’s inexperienced pace attack.A self-confessed admirer of Chris Gayle, Campbell channelled the inner Universe Boss perfectly, flaying the Indian attack with brute power and freedom in his 101 off 68 balls (9×4, 5×6).Hope and Jangoo then kept the scoring rate around eight runs an over through the middle and late stages of the innings.Hope played the role of both anchor and aggressor. He was dropped on 27 by Virat Kohli at short midwicket, with the ball bursting through his hands, and made the most of the reprieve.The West Indies captain went on to score 104 off 94 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes, as he kept the scoring rate high and prevented India from making a comeback.Jangoo provided further support, combining controlled stroke-play with attacking shots. He reached his second ODI century in 69 balls and finished with 114 off 83 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes.It was the first time West Indies had three centurions in the same ODI innings. However, they scored only 82 for five in the final 11 overs, a period that eventually proved significant as India completed the chase with relative ease.
