Navratri 2026: Start End Date, and Muhurat in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia
Families celebrating Navratri overseas must carefully consider local time variations, particularly with tithi timings. While Pratipada tithi starts and ends simultaneously across the globe, Ashtami and Navami might occur on different days outside India, leading to potential confusion. Using a locally tailored panchang ensures accurate timings. Community involvement remains crucial, and local temples may modify event schedules based on these panchang adjustments.

Indian websites list Navratri timings in IST. But if you live in New Jersey, London or Sydney, those times don’t help much. Converting them isn’t enough either, because muhurat depends on sunrise where you actually live. Here’s what families abroad need to know.

The Tithi Is the Same Everywhere

Pratipada tithi starts and ends at the same moment worldwide. Only the clock time changes. In India, it begins at 9:19 PM on 10 October and ends at 9:30 PM on 11 October.Converted to local time, Pratipada runs:·US Eastern (New York, New Jersey, Toronto): 11:49 AM, 10 October to 12:00 PM, 11 October·US Central (Chicago, Houston, Dallas): 10:49 AM, 10 October to 11:00 AM, 11 October·US Mountain (Denver): 9:49 AM, 10 October to 10:00 AM, 11 October·US Pacific (California, Seattle, Vancouver): 8:49 AM, 10 October to 9:00 AM, 11 October·UK (London, Birmingham, Leicester): 4:49 PM, 10 October to 5:00 PM, 11 October·UAE (Dubai): 7:49 PM, 10 October to 8:00 PM, 11 October·Singapore and Perth: 11:49 PM, 10 October to 12:00 AM, 12 October·Sydney and Melbourne: 2:49 AM, 11 October to 3:00 AM, 12 October

So When Should You Do Ghatasthapana?

In every one of these places, Pratipada is present at sunrise on Sunday, 11 October. That makes 11 October the first day of Navratri worldwide. The best time is the morning, after sunrise, while Pratipada is still running.East Coast USA and Canada: Sunrise is around 7:10 AM. You have a comfortable window until noon, though the earlier part of the morning is preferred.Central and Mountain time: Aim to finish before 11 AM or 10 AM, respectively.West Coast USA and Canada: This is where families need to plan ahead. Pratipada ends at 9:00 AM. With sunrise around 7 AM, that leaves roughly two hours. Get the Kalash, soil, barley and coconut ready the night before.UK: Sunrise in London is around 7:20 AM. Any time in the morning works well, since Pratipada continues until 5 PM.Australia: Pratipada runs through the whole day on 11 October. Do it in the morning after sunrise, around 6 AM in Sydney.

Ashtami and Navami May Differ From India

This catches many NRI families off guard. In India’s Delhi panchang, Ashtami and Navami both fall on 19 October. Abroad, the sunrise rule can split them.Going by tithi timings at local sunrise, families in the USA, Canada and the UK will find Ashtami falling on Sunday, 18 October and Navami on Monday, 19 October. In Australia, Ashtami moves to Monday, 19 October, with Navami on Tuesday, 20 October. So if your relatives in India do Kanya Pujan on 19 October, yours may fall on a different day. That’s not a mistake. It’s simply how the tithi falls in your city.Dussehra falls on Tuesday, 20 October in the US, Canada and the UK.

A Few Tips for Families Abroad

Use a panchang that lets you set your city. Many apps and websites offer this, and it saves a lot of guesswork. If you’re joining a community Ghatasthapana at a local mandir, check their timing in advance. Temples in the US often schedule weekend pujas based on local panchangs, and some adjust for working families. Can’t get fresh mango leaves? Many Indian grocery stores stock them during Navratri. Ashoka leaves work as a substitute, and some families use betel leaves when nothing else is available.Times are calculated from tithi timings and approximate local sunrise. Always confirm with a panchang set to your exact city or with your local temple priest.
