NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) conferred degrees on 2,265 students during its 28th Convocation Ceremony held on July 12, 2026. The graduating batch included students from undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and research programmes across multiple disciplines.The ceremony was attended by Dr Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, CEO of Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), as the chief guest. Dr Prahlada Rama Rao, Acting Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Guwahati, presided over the event, while Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, presented the convocation report.

Students receive medals for academic excellenceSaptarshi Mukherjee, pursuing B.Tech in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, received the President of India Gold Medal after securing the highest Cumulative Performance Index among eligible undergraduate students.Atri Chattopadhyay from B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Engineering was awarded the Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal for overall excellence, including academic performance, extracurricular activities and social service.Praneel Bhattacharya, M.Tech in Chemical Engineering, received the Governor of Assam PG Gold Medal, while Sarthak Kapoor from B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering received the Governor of Assam UG Gold Medal. The institute also awarded 18 students with Institute Silver Medals for their academic performance.

Institute expands research and innovation initiativesAddressing the graduating students, Prof. Devendra Jalihal said, “As our graduating students embark on diverse career paths, whether in higher education, industry, entrepreneurship, administration, management, or academia, I extend my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to each one of them.”He added that IIT Guwahati published 2,478 research papers during the year and continued expanding research infrastructure, incubation facilities and industry engagement initiatives.The institute is currently working on 290 research and consultancy projects worth Rs 300 crore. It has also introduced an M.Tech programme in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence aligned with the National Education Policy 2020.Focus on research, global partnerships and entrepreneurshipChief guest Dr Shivkumar Kalyanaraman advised graduates to continue learning and use their knowledge to create meaningful societal impact. He said, “In the age of AI, the true differentiator will be deep knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to define meaningful problems rather than merely generate answers.”IIT Guwahati has developed collaborations with institutions in the United Kingdom and Japan in areas including artificial intelligence, healthcare, research and student mobility. The institute has also supported startups in healthcare, agritech, defence, clean technology and fintech sectors.With more than 26,790 graduates over its 32-year history, IIT Guwahati currently has 455 faculty members and more than 8,600 students across its academic programmes.
