Anyone who has filled out a school form or a passport application already has everything needed. All it takes is a date of birth and a bit of addition. As per Vedic numerology, two figures matter before any other: Mulank (also spelt Moolank), drawn from the day of birth, and Bhagyank, drawn from the full date. Indian numerologists open every reading with them. Here is how to work out both, with three examples.
Mulank: Only the Day Counts
Look at the day and ignore the month and year. A single-digit day is the Mulank as it stands. A two-digit day gets added down to one digit.The 6th gives Mulank 6. The 23rd gives 2 + 3, which is 5. The 29th gives 2 + 9 = 11, and 1 + 1 brings it to 2.That is why dates fall into families. The 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th share Mulank 1. The 2nd, 11th, 20th and 29th share Mulank 2. The 3rd, 12th, 21st and 30th go with Mulank 3, and the 4th, 13th, 22nd and 31st with Mulank 4. Mulank 5 takes the 5th, 14th and 23rd. Mulank 6 takes the 6th, 15th and 24th. The 7th, 16th and 25th make Mulank 7. The 8th, 17th and 26th make Mulank 8, and the 9th, 18th and 27th make Mulank 9.
Bhagyank: The Whole Date Goes In
Bhagyank uses every digit of the date, the year included. Write the date out as numbers, add them all and keep reducing until one digit is left. January to September count as 1 to 9. October, November and December count as 10, 11 and 12, so their digits are added separately.Consider 14 February 1990. The digits are 1, 4, 0, 2, 1, 9, 9, 0, which add up to 26. Then 2 + 6 gives 8. The Mulank is 5, since 1 + 4 = 5. So this person is a 5 and an 8.Next, 25 December 1985. The digits are 2, 5, 1, 2, 1, 9, 8, 5, and the total is 33. That reduces to 6. The day 25 gives a Mulank of 7. The pair is 7 and 6.Then 31 July 2000. The digits are 3, 1, 0, 7, 2, 0, 0, 0, which come to 13, then 4. The Mulank is also 4, since 3 + 1 = 4. Both numbers match.
Which Planet Is Behind Each Number
Every digit from 1 to 9 belongs to a graha. Surya holds 1, and Chandra holds 2. Guru rules 3, Rahu rules 4, and Budh rules 5. Shukra takes 6, Ketu takes 7, Shani takes 8, and Mangal takes 9.So the 14 February person has Budh behind the Mulank and Shani behind the Bhagyank. The 25 December person has Ketu and Shukra. The 31 July person has Rahu on both sides.
What the Two Numbers Do
Mulank is the daily self. It shows how a person talks, reacts and makes small decisions, and it often explains the habits friends notice first. Bhagyank points further out. It reflects the direction life tends to take, including recurring lessons and the kind of opportunities that show up.Budh with Shani, as in the first example, pairs a quick mind with a slow, serious teacher. Ideas arrive fast, but results ask for patience. Ketu with Shukra suggests someone who values deep, private bonds over a crowd of acquaintances. A matching pair like Rahu and Rahu is read as that planet’s themes at double strength, so unusual turns, foreign contacts and sudden changes are likely to be a regular part of the story. When the planets get along, the reading feels smooth. When they do not, the person usually feels pulled in two directions. That is where the interpretation does its real work, because it points to which habit to build and which to ease off.
A Few Common Questions
Many readers ask about dates like 11 or 22. Numerologists often note the double-digit figure first and then reduce it. A person born on the 22nd is a Mulank 4, with 22 kept in mind as a stronger layer.Another frequent doubt is the year. It never changes the Mulank. It only affects the Bhagyank. And what if the birth certificate and a family record show different dates? Use the legal one.
The Easy Way to Remember It
Mulank asks, “Which day were you born?” Bhagyank asks, “Which date altogether?” Write both down on a sheet of paper, match each to its planet and read the two side by side. With those two numbers in hand, the next steps open up. Namank, drawn from the name, adds a third layer, and personal year and month numbers follow after that. But everything starts with the day and the full date, and the sums take about a minute.
