Quote of the Day from the Bhagavad Gita, 19 October 2026: Why Your Mind Needs Training More Than Motivation
January sees a surge in gym memberships, but many individuals abandon their fitness goals by March. Motivation can be fleeting, often resembling weather changes that affect our commitment. Krishna’s teachings in the Bhagavad Gita highlight the importance of regular practice and detachment to manage a restless mind. Establishing small, consistent routines can lead to long-term success, even during challenging days.

Every January, gym memberships shoot up. By March, most of those new cards sit unused in wallets. The motivation was real on day one. It simply did not last.Motivation feels powerful, but it behaves a lot like weather. Chapter 6 Verse 35 of the Bhagavad Gita points to something sturdier. Krishna agrees with Arjuna that the mind is restless and hard to hold. Yet he says it can be controlled through regular practice and detachment.

Arjuna Compared the Mind to Wind

Just before this verse, Arjuna complains that controlling the mind feels as difficult as holding the wind. Krishna does not argue with him. That honesty is useful. Nobody is being told the mind is easy to manage.

Abhyasa Means Repeated Effort

The word Krishna uses is abhyasa. It means practice, done again and again.Motivation depends on how someone feels today. Practice cares only whether the task got done. A student revising for twenty minutes each evening will usually outpace one who studies for five hours once a fortnight.

Training Works on Dull Days

Energy dips after a long shift. Rain cancels the evening walk. These are exactly the days where training proves its worth. So set a minimum that still counts on bad days. Ten push-ups. One page of reading. The habit survives, even when the effort is small.

Vairagya Clears the Distractions

Krishna pairs practice with vairagya, often translated as detachment. It means loosening the pull of things that scatter attention.Keeping the phone in another room during study time is a small example. Less pull from outside means less struggle inside.

Motivation Still Has a Place

Excitement helps at the start. It gets someone to sign up for a course or buy a pair of running shoes. But it rarely carries anyone through the fortieth session. By then, training has to take over.

A Trained Mind Holds Steady

In Bhagavad Gita 6.35, the restless mind is treated as something that can be trained. That is hopeful news for anyone who has started and stopped many times before. The gym card can come out of the wallet again. This time, a short, fixed routine will count for more than a burst of enthusiasm.
