Mizoram to recruit 100 regular primary teachers in 2026; MTET changes under consideration
Mizoram Education Minister Vanlalthlana announces plans to recruit 100 regular primary teachers in 2026.

Mizoram plans to recruit 100 regular primary teachers in 2026 as the state government looks to strengthen its primary education system and improve student learning outcomes. Education Minister Vanlalthlana announced the proposed recruitment at the general conference of the Mizoram Primary Teachers’ Association (MPTA) in Aizawl on Friday, according to a report by PTI.The minister also highlighted concerns over the state’s performance in school education, saying Mizoram ranked 31st nationally in the Performance Grading Index (PGI). He identified learning outcomes as a major area requiring attention and outlined steps being taken to improve the quality of elementary education.

Mizoram plans 100 primary teacher appointments in 2026

The state government has sanctioned the appointment of 671 teachers and is working towards recruiting 100 regular primary teachers during the current year, Vanlalthlana said. The proposed recruitment is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the teaching workforce and improve the delivery of primary education across the state. Regular teacher appointments are expected to support classroom instruction and address the need to improve learning outcomes at the elementary level. However, the minister’s announcement did not specify the subject-wise or district-wise distribution of the proposed 100 posts, or provide a detailed recruitment schedule.

Mizoram introduces SAfES to improve learning outcomes

Addressing concerns over students’ academic performance, Vanlalthlana said the government had introduced the Standardised Assessment for Elementary Schools (SAfES).The initiative is intended to assess students’ understanding of subjects rather than their ability to memorise lessons. By placing greater emphasis on comprehension, the assessment framework seeks to encourage meaningful learning and help identify areas where students need additional academic support. The minister’s remarks come amid concerns over Mizoram’s position in the Performance Grading Index, which assesses school education across states and Union territories. The state’s 31st-place ranking, as cited by the minister, has brought learning outcomes into focus as an area requiring improvement.

Mizoram considers changes to MTET eligibility

The state government is also considering changes to the Mizoram Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) to provide more opportunities for in-service teachers to qualify.Vanlalthlana said the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) was working on arrangements to allow in-service teachers with more than five years of service remaining to appear for the MTET before 2028.The government is also considering relaxing assessment requirements for serving teachers and conducting the eligibility test twice a year. The proposed measures are aimed at giving teachers additional opportunities to meet the eligibility requirements. The proposals are under consideration, and further details on any changes to the examination schedule or eligibility requirements are awaited.

MPTA seeks Hindi, computers in primary schools

At its general conference, the Mizoram Primary Teachers’ Association adopted two resolutions seeking government intervention to introduce Hindi in primary schools and provide computer sets to all primary schools across the state, officials said. The demands highlight the association’s push to expand learning opportunities and improve access to technology in elementary education. The proposed introduction of Hindi would add to the association’s demands on language learning, while the request for computer sets seeks to strengthen access to digital resources in schools. The resolutions reflect the association’s call for additional educational facilities and resources to support teaching and learning across Mizoram.

Learning outcomes remain a priority for Mizoram

The proposed recruitment of regular primary teachers, possible changes to the MTET and the introduction of SAfES form part of the state’s broader efforts to improve school education. While the government is working to strengthen the teaching workforce, its focus on assessments based on comprehension signals an effort to move beyond rote learning. The MPTA’s demands for Hindi instruction and computer facilities also underline the need to expand educational resources at the primary level. The implementation of the proposed recruitment and any changes to the teacher eligibility test will be important developments to watch as Mizoram seeks to improve learning outcomes and strengthen its elementary education system.(With inputs from PTI)
