Why Is Tuesday Dedicated to Hanuman? The Mars Link Behind the Belief
Tuesdays are recognized as the day for worshipping Hanuman, connecting him to the qualities of planet Mars. Devotees engage in various rituals, including offerings of sindoor and sweets at temples. Many people observe fasts or special vows on Tuesdays for specific intentions. Hanuman serves as a remedy for challenges associated with Mars in individuals’ lives. Worship on Tuesdays is believed to invoke courage and strength for everyday challenges.

Walk into a Hanuman temple on a Tuesday and the change is hard to miss. The line runs longer than usual. Sindoor and chameli oil hang heavy in the air, and boxes of boondi laddoo stack up by the gate. Somewhere near a pillar, a devotee is on maybe the tenth round of the Hanuman Chalisa. Across North India, Tuesday is Hanuman’s day. And the reason sits in the name of the day itself, along with a planet whose nature matches his closely.

The Day of Mangal

Tuesday in Hindi is Mangalvar. It is named after Mangal, the planet Mars. The Indian week follows the planets in order, with Sunday for the Sun and Monday for the Moon, and the pattern continues until Saturday.Vedic astrology gives Mars the role of commander among the grahas. It rules courage and physical strength. It also governs discipline and the instinct to protect others. Red is its colour, and its temperament is active and full of drive. Now look at Hanuman. He lifted an entire mountain to save Lakshmana. He crossed the ocean in a single leap to reach Lanka. He lived as a lifelong brahmachari, and every act of his strength was offered in service to Rama. So Hanuman carries the qualities of Mars, with all of it turned towards devotion and none of it towards ego.It made sense, then, for Mangalvar to become his day.

The Colour Connection

Hanuman idols are almost always red or saffron, coated in sindoor. A much-loved story explains why.One morning Hanuman watched Sita put sindoor in the parting of her hair. He asked her about it. She told him it was for Rama’s long life and good health. Hanuman reasoned that if a pinch could do so much, a whole body covered in it would do far more. So he smeared sindoor over himself from head to toe.Rama was deeply moved by this simple, open-hearted act. He blessed Hanuman and declared that anyone offering him sindoor would see their wishes come true.Red and orange happen to be Mars’s colours as well. So when sindoor is offered to Hanuman on a Tuesday, the deity and the planet are honoured together in one act.

Hanuman as a Remedy for Mars

A badly placed Mars in a birth chart is linked with short temper and accidents. It can also bring disputes, blood-related health issues and a delay in marriage. Those with Mangal dosha, often called manglik, are commonly told to worship Hanuman on Tuesdays. The reasoning is easy to follow. Hanuman is the master of Martian energy. His strength never slides into cruelty, and his courage never turns into pride. Praying to him helps steer the raw force of Mars into something calm and protective. This matters right now. Mars is debilitated in Cancer in the sidereal zodiac and moves into Leo only on Thursday, 12 November. Until then, Hanuman worship is a sound remedy for irritability and restlessness. Aries and Scorpio Moon signs, both ruled by Mars, will benefit most.

How Tuesdays Are Observed

Plenty of devotees keep the Mangalvar vrat. Some eat a single meal through the day, while others skip salt. A vow of 21 Tuesdays in a row is common when someone is praying for a specific wish.At the temple, sindoor mixed with chameli oil is the main offering. Red flowers and a red cloth usually go with it. For prasad, boondi and besan laddoo are favourites, though gur with roasted chana is just as traditional. The Hanuman Chalisa remains the most widely read prayer. Some families gather on Tuesday evenings for Sundarkand, the part of the Ramayana that describes Hanuman’s search for Sita in Lanka. Others repeat “Om Hanumate Namah” or the Mars mantra “Om Angarakaya Namah”.Tuesday has long been seen as a day for courage too. A morning prayer to Hanuman before a tough task or an exam is a habit in many homes. Big decisions often wait for this day.

Saturday Belongs to Him Too

Hanuman is worshipped on Saturdays as well. As the story goes, he freed Shani from Ravana’s prison. Grateful, Shani promised that he would never trouble anyone who prays to Hanuman. That is why mustard oil and sindoor are offered to Hanuman on Saturdays to soften Saturn’s hard phases. So Hanuman shields his devotees from the two grahas people fear most in Vedic astrology. Mars gets his Tuesday. Saturn gets his Saturday.
