Diwali bank holidays: Will banks remain closed for Dhanteras, Diwali and other festivals - Check state-wise list

NEW DELHI: Banks across several states in India will remain closed on multiple days in November 2026 as Diwali celebrations and related regional festivals bring a series of holidays. The closures will be observed on November 9, 10 and 11, depending on the state and the festival being celebrated.Known as the festival of lights, Diwali is not limited to a single day. Celebrations extend across several days, with each occasion carrying its own cultural and regional significance. This year, bank holidays have been scheduled for Diwali, Laxmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, Bali Pratipada, Bhai Dooj and other related observances.

Where and where will banks remain closed:

November 9: Banks in Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Sikkim, Manipur, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will remain closed for Diwali/Laxmi Puja (Deepawali), Govardhan Pooja and Vishwakarma Day.November 10: Banks in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Sikkim will remain closed for Diwali (Bali Pratipada), Deepawali (Govardhan Puja), Laxmi Puja and Vikram Samvant New Year Day.November 11: Banks in Sikkim, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh will remain closed for Laxmi Puja (Deepawali), Ningol Chakkouba, Bhratridwitiya, Bhaidooj and Chitragupt Jayanti.

How will bank holidays affect customers

Bank customers need to check the holiday schedule for their location, as closures depend on the regional festival or occasion being observed.Apart from festival-related closures, scheduled and non-scheduled banks also observe holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, in line with the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday schedule.A branch closure does not mean customers lose access to all banking services. ATMs, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), internet banking and mobile banking applications remain available for routine transactions, including fund transfers, bill payments and account management. The main inconvenience is for transactions that require a visit to a physical branch. Customers planning large cash deposits, cheque processing, demand drafts or other branch-dependent work may have to wait until their branch reopens. With several holidays scheduled across November, checking the applicable state calendar before visiting a branch can help customers plan their banking requirements and avoid delays.
