June jobless rate remains at 5.5%, but women find it hard to get work

NEW DELHI: Unemployment rate (UR) in June remained the same at 5.5%, but women found it difficult to get work, the latest monthly PLFS data released by NSO Wednesday showed.Female UR in current weekly status (CWS) rose to 5.9% from 5.6% June, while jobless rate in men dipped 5.3% from 5.4%. Female labour force participation rate (LFPR) slid for the fourth consecutive month to 32.7%, on account of a sharp decline seen in rural areas (36.6%) from a high of 40% in Feb.In the current weekly status, activity status is determined on reference period of past seven days preceding the date of survey.Under this, a person is considered unemployed in a week if they did not work even for one hour on any day during the reference week but sought or were available for work at least for one hour on any day during this time.LFPR which depicts the share of people working or looking for work also remained the same at 54.4%in June, but marginally higher than 54.2% recorded a year earlier.
