Some students learn programming to build apps. Others dream of working at a technology giant. Spatika Prasad chose a different path—one that took her to the heart of India’s growing private space sector.Long before she packed her bags for higher studies abroad, Spatika was writing software that would help launch a rocket into space. Today, after contributing to Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 mission, she is preparing to begin a master’s degree at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Netherlands, adding another exciting chapter to an already inspiring journey.

From IIT Madras classrooms to a historic space mission

As an Embedded Software Engineer at Skyroot Aerospace, Spatika worked on software that played a critical role in the Vikram-1 mission—India’s first private orbital rocket mission. While her contribution remained behind the scenes, it was central to ensuring that the mission could proceed smoothly.According to IIT Madras BS Programmes, her responsibilities included developing and testing flight sequence software, pre-launch ground check software, and onboard-in-the-loop simulations—systems that help validate a rocket’s readiness before launch. When Vikram-1 successfully lifted off, it was more than just another mission for her.“Seeing years of hard work culminate in a successful launch has been one of the proudest moments of my career,” Spatika said.

How IIT Madras shaped her journey

Alongside her professional work, Spatika pursued the BS Programme offered by IIT Madras, where she strengthened her understanding of programming, data science and analytical thinking.Reflecting on her learning experience, she credited the programme with sharpening her approach to solving complex engineering challenges.“The strong foundation in programming, data science, and analytical thinking… has played a significant role in shaping my problem-solving abilities,” she said. Her journey highlights how interdisciplinary learning is becoming increasingly valuable in emerging fields such as aerospace, artificial intelligence and embedded systems.

The next destination: The Netherlands

After contributing to one of India’s landmark private space missions, Spatika is now preparing for another milestone. She has secured admission to a master’s programme at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Netherlands, where she will continue her higher studies from August. For students, her story carries an important message.Career paths are no longer limited to choosing between engineering, computer science or data science. Increasingly, breakthroughs happen where disciplines intersect. Skills in programming, analytics and systems thinking are now helping solve real-world problems—from healthcare and finance to space exploration.Spatika’s journey—from learning through the IIT Madras BS Programme to contributing to mission-critical rocket software and now pursuing advanced studies abroad—is a reminder that curiosity, persistence and continuous learning can open doors to opportunities that once seemed unimaginable.Disclaimer: This article is based on information shared publicly by the IIT Madras BS Programmes and other publicly available sources.
