The ritual performance method

It starts with a new ash gourd, sliced horizontally and hollowed out to make a bowl. First it is smeared with turmeric and kumkum and then filled with sesame oil or pure ghee. Two cotton wicks are put in and lit with prayers to Lord Kalabhairava and Goddess Kushmanda.The Deepam is usually lighted between 4.30 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. during the early morning hours of the Kalashtami or Amavasya. This ritual is generally performed by a large number of devotees for 19 consecutive Kalashtamis or 19 Amavasyas with the recitation of prayers like the Kalabhairava Ashtakam and partial fast.
