When the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 examination was cancelled following allegations of a paper leak, All India Rank 1 (AIR 1) Aryan Gupta did not immediately see it as an opportunity. “I was disappointed at first, I was really devastated and cried a lot when the paper was cancelled,” Gupta told ANI. It is a sentence that carries none of the polish toppers are expected to perform for cameras.
A setback shared by millions
The original NEET UG 2026 exam had been conducted on May 3 before being scrapped amid paper leak claims, forcing the National Testing Agency (NTA) to order a nationwide re-test for lakhs of aspirants. For Gupta, the cancellation was not an isolated injury. It was a wound shared by an entire generation of medical aspirants sitting for the same test on the same day.“Still, I came to the realisation that of course it is unfair what happened but it’s not just with me, 22 lakh other aspirants have suffered the same fate and they are writing the examination again,” he said.This is where the story turns. Not on a single moment of triumph, but on a quiet recalibration: grief acknowledged, then set aside for the work ahead.“Somewhere along the line I realised that I have got another chance. So, I just bounced back and gave my best everyday. I started studying from the next day itself and the results are in front of you,” Gupta said.The results, in this case, were not modest. Gupta secured AIR 1 in the re-conducted NEET UG examination, scoring 715 out of 720, a full 29 marks higher than the previous year’s topper. Where he had made five errors in the cancelled paper, he narrowed that down to a single mistake in the retest.
A message built on discipline, not shortcuts
Addressing students yet to sit for future examinations, Gupta’s advice avoids strategy hacks or motivational shortcuts. It leans instead on obedience to process.“To the students who will write the exam later, I will say, trust your teachers, follow them blindly because they know much more than you do,” he said. “Give your best everyday and just keep doing the work every single day with consistency and discipline, and things will work out on their own.”
Acknowledging the cracks in the system
The NEET UG 2026 paper leak has triggered widespread protests across the country, with thousands of students demanding accountability and reforms in the examination process. Gupta, who benefited personally from the eventual outcome, does not pretend the disruption was justified.“Protest and dissent are essential parts of a democracy so you can just try and we can hope that we can make our system better, there are cracks and flaws in every single thing and system, I hope that there will be reforms,” he said.For Gupta, the arc from devastation to AIR 1 reads like vindication.
