A terrifying knockout at the 2026 Commonwealth Games left spectators stunned after Wales’ Orlando Holley-Sotomi blasted Lesotho’s Refiloe Thai through the ropes during their men’s 70kg boxing quarterfinal, prompting an immediate medical response inside the ring.The frightening sequence unfolded just over a minute into the opening round when Holley-Sotomi unleashed a devastating right hand that landed flush on Thai’s temple.The impact left the Lesotho boxer unable to defend himself as he collapsed through the ropes, creating one of the most dramatic and concerning moments of the Games so far.

Terrifying knockout halts quarterfinal

The quarterfinal had begun at a frantic pace, with both boxers looking to establish control early. Thai started aggressively, but Holley-Sotomi gradually found his rhythm and began landing clean punches.The breakthrough came quickly.A powerful right hand caught Thai on the temple, instantly taking away his balance. As the Welsh boxer followed up with a left hand, Thai collapsed through the ropes, ending up partially supported by the bottom rope while lying motionless.Medical staff rushed into the ring within seconds to attend to the injured boxer before carefully moving him back inside the ring for treatment.Thankfully, Thai soon showed encouraging signs by attempting to sit up as doctors continued their assessment, easing fears after the alarming scenes.The referee immediately waved off the contest, awarding Holley-Sotomi a first-round knockout victory.WATCH:

While concern remained focused on Thai’s condition, the victory marked another impressive milestone for the 22-year-old Welsh boxer.Holley-Sotomi had already impressed earlier in the tournament by defeating Paddy Hewitt in his opening bout. His emphatic knockout victory now sends him into the semifinals, assuring him at least a bronze medal.Despite his eye-catching performances, the Welsh prospect insisted he is remaining grounded.“I’m taking it a day at a time and taking it all in. I’m grateful I am here and yeah I am going to hopefully keep getting in there again and again. Nobody can afford to overlook me, no-one is the favourite here,” he said.The spectacular stoppage has already drawn comparisons with some of boxing’s most memorable one-punch knockouts, underlining Holley-Sotomi’s growing reputation as one of the breakout stars of the Glasgow Games.
