Thalapathy Vijay‘s ‘Jana Nayagan’ faced disruption in Karnataka after scheduled screenings were cancelled at Gurushree Theatre in Mandya on Thursday. The decision came after members of a Kannada organisation staged protests over the ongoing Cauvery water-sharing issue.As reported by Mathrubhumi, the demonstration was linked to the Cauvery Water Regulation Authority’s (CWRA) recent direction asking Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days. Protesters gathered outside the theatre and raised slogans against the order.As the situation escalated, some members of the group allegedly attempted to enter the theatre premises. Police personnel intervened and prevented them from entering.
Posters torn down as theatre suspends scheduled shows
The protest intensified outside the theatre as demonstrators pulled down posters of ‘Jana Nayagan’ and demanded that the film should not be screened. Following the unrest, the theatre management decided to cancel the scheduled shows.Speaking to reporters, the protesters said, “Screening a film featuring the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was unacceptable at a time when Karnataka was facing concerns over drinking water availability and widespread protests against the release of Cauvery water.”The incident comes amid renewed tensions surrounding the Cauvery water dispute which has sparked protests in parts of Karnataka following the latest CWRA directive.
‘Jana Nayagan’ box office collections update
Despite the disruption in Mandya, ‘Jana Nayagan’ continued its theatrical run across other regions.According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 3.98 crore (India net) on its second Thursday. This represents a 34.8% decline from Wednesday’s collection of Rs 6.10 crore.The latest box office figures have pushed ‘Jana Nayagan’ to an India net collection of Rs 153.48 crore after eight days in theatres. Its India gross collection has now reached Rs 179.25 crore.The film has also performed strongly in international markets. It has earned Rs 81 crore overseas, taking its worldwide gross collection to Rs 260.25 crore.
