From a home lab to two Guinness World Records: How 17-year-old Hiten Dharpure is shrinking the future of robotics
Nagpur teenager Hiten Dharpure earns second Guinness World Record with micro-robotics invention

What can a teenager build from a small room at home? For most people, the answer may be a school project or a science model. But for 17-year-old Hiten Dharpure from Nagpur, Maharashtra, the answer is a Guinness World Record. The young innovator, full-stack application developer and micro-robotics engineer has earned international recognition by creating the world’s smallest robotic arm, proving that groundbreaking innovation does not always require expensive laboratories. His journey is now inspiring students across India to dream bigger, experiment fearlessly and believe that age is never a barrier to scientific excellence.

A paperclip-sized invention that made global history

In January 2026, Hiten secured his second Guinness World Record by designing the world’s smallest electro-mechanical robotic arm, measuring just 39.25 mm (1.54 inches)—more than 5 mm smaller than the previous world record. What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that the tiny robotic arm is fully functional. It can perform three-axis movement, pick up miniature objects and execute highly precise motions despite being only slightly larger than a paperclip.Hiten said his goal was not merely to break a record but to demonstrate that “ultra-precision micro-manufacturing does not require a big, high-level laboratory.” Instead, he wanted to show that world-class engineering could emerge from a humble home workspace using accessible technology.

Engineering from scratch, one millimetre at a time

Creating the robotic arm required months of careful planning and repeated trial and error.Hiten first designed the complete mechanical structure using advanced CAD software before fabricating the miniature components through high-precision FDM 3D printing. He then programmed Arduino microcontrollers in C/C++, using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to synchronise tiny servo motors that control the arm’s movements. The process was far from easy. Many prototypes failed as fragile components snapped under motor torque or internal parts became too cramped for accurate movement. Each failure, however, became a lesson that helped him refine the design by mere fractions of a millimetre until the final working prototype was ready.

Two Guinness World Records before turning 18

The robotic arm is Hiten’s second Guinness World Record. In April 2025, he created the world’s smallest AI weather station, measuring only 74 mm × 44 mm × 60 mm. Compact enough to fit in the palm of a hand, the device uses AI-powered algorithms to monitor temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure in real time.Beyond record-breaking inventions, Hiten has also developed HastaVaani, an offline Indian Sign Language (ISL) translation mobile application aimed at reducing communication barriers for people with hearing and speech impairments. His growing list of achievements also includes more than 800 academic and technical certifications in robotics, artificial intelligence and embedded systems, besides recognition from the India Book of Records. He has also been felicitated multiple times by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for his contributions to technology.

A lesson for every STEM student

Hiten believes innovation should be accessible to everyone, regardless of resources. His inventions also carry practical potential, from enabling ultra-precision microsurgeries in healthcare to assisting the manufacturing of advanced electronic components. Now a two-time Guinness World Records holder, the teenager has set himself another ambitious target—to create a new global innovation record every year. His message to young learners is simple yet powerful: with patience, persistence and curiosity, even a home workshop can become a place where world records are born.Disclaimer: This article is intended for informational and educational purposes only.
