NEW DELHI: Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist Asmita Dey is set for another major milestone in her career. The Uttar Pradesh Police is preparing to promote the Indian judoka, currently serving as a Sub-Inspector, to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).Asmita scripted history in Glasgow by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal. She defeated Canada’s Heidi Quach by yuko in the women’s 48kg final, coming from behind to force the contest into Golden Score – judo’s version of sudden-death extra time – before landing the match-winning score.Speaking to TimesofIndia.com, Asmita said she had already been informed about the promotion and is now waiting for the official announcement.“Mujhe bataya gaya hai ki mujhe DSP bana denge. Ek letter aaya tha, usme likha tha. Abhi main Sub-Inspector hoon. UP Police ne bahut support kiya mujhe. CWG jaane se pehle financial help bhi ki. I am really grateful,” she said.“That support, security and financial aid – I can’t forget it. UP Police helped me and my family in many ways,” she added.The promotion carries a special emotional significance for Asmita, who lost her father in December.“Aaj papa hote to bahot khush hote. I want to dedicate this promotion to him. I was so close to him. He was a big support to me,” said the 23-year-old.Confirming the development, a UP Police official told TimesofIndia.com that the promotion process is already underway.“Yes, Asmita is going to be a DSP. The letter has been prepared and is waiting for implementation. The letter has been sent to CM sir (Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath). Whenever he signs it, she will officially be given the designation of DSP,” the official said.The official added that Asmita has already earned the promotion and will first serve as an Inspector until the DSP appointment is formally approved.“She has made our country proud. She went to the Commonwealth Games as a Sub-Inspector. Until she is officially appointed as a DSP, she will hold the post of Inspector, not Sub-Inspector. The letter may take some time, maybe a month or two, but she will be a DSP,” the official said.

Born in Belonia, Tripura, Asmita joined the Uttar Pradesh Police through the sports quota in 2023 as a constable. She was later promoted to Sub-Inspector after winning medals at the national level.Now, after scripting history as India’s first Commonwealth Games judo gold medallist, Asmita is set to add another milestone to her journey by becoming a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Uttar Pradesh.
