Granite, grass and a helipad: Trump shows off his White House construction projects
US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump turned a routine walk around the White House grounds into a detailed showcase of his latest construction projects on Wednesday (local time), taking reporters through the newly rebuilt driveway, the revamped helipad and other work underway around the complex.Trump used the impromptu tour to point out everything from granite cuts and stanchion placement to landscaping and the removal of potholes, while repeatedly stressing his personal involvement in how the projects were being carried out.Trump began by highlighting work that had not previously been announced, the replacement of the White House driveway, CNN reported.“This was always asphalt, which is very basic, not appropriate for a great house — for a great place like the White House,” Trump said as construction continued around him.The driveway, he said, had been rebuilt with white granite mined in California, which he described as a “very special stone.”Trump also used the tour to explain why work on the helipad had been taken apart after construction had already begun. The landing zone was started shortly after his UFC fight in June, but the stonework was later dismantled. The White House had not previously given an explanation for the change.Trump said the problem was the slope of the helipad, which he felt was excessive.“I felt it was too much slope. It’s a slope for the rain, but I felt it was too much slope,” Trump said, adding that the helipad was now “dead flat.”He later addressed the workers involved in the project, acknowledging that the changes had cost them additional time.“Sorry to take an extra week-and-a-half, but lifting it up was one of the best things we’ve ever done, lifting it up, right? I’m sure you didn’t like that.”

Trump points to facade, landscaping work

As the tour continued, Trump directed reporters towards an opening in the fence surrounding the helipad and pointed out work on the White House facade. He said paint had been removed and redone before drawing attention to the stone.“If you take a look at the stone, look how perfect the stone is,” he said, adding he’s “very proud to do it.”He also paused to showcase newly laid topsoil and grass near the unfinished helipad.“If you’re grass, you’re very happy,” he said.Trump then walked with construction workers in neon vests and hard hats onto the newly carved granite helipad, which features the presidential seal. He compared the project with his restoration of the Wollman Rink in Central Park. The president signed the back of a carved eagle that is set to be placed inside the seal.

Ballroom remains central to Trump’s White House plans

Although Trump’s 90,000-square-foot ballroom was not included in the tour, he repeatedly returned to the project during his remarks. His administration has taken the ballroom project to the Supreme Court, arguing that the structure and the state-of-the-art bunker facility planned underneath it are matters of national security. Trump and the White House have recently sought to strengthen that argument by calling the ballroom the “military complex”.Trump dismissed the possibility that the Supreme Court could rule against him and bring construction to a halt.“I can’t imagine it happening,” he said.A court filing submitted earlier this month said construction was progressing with a 250-person crew working 20-hour days, seven days a week. The filing said the complex was “65% complete in its entirety.”

‘I love construction’: Trump links projects to his legacy

Trump’s tour, his second impromptu construction-focused excursion with reporters this year, also gave him an opportunity to speak about the importance he places on building and maintaining the White House complex.“One thing I know how to do is build. … I love construction, I love seeing things properly taken care of,” he said, adding that the projects “will be here long after we’re gone.”A recent review from Politifact found that Trump had spent significant time discussing the projects during public remarks in 2026, with construction featuring more prominently than any other topic except his war with Iran.Trump also described how he expected the new facilities to work during visits by dignitaries.“Without even having to go into the White House, they get out of the car on the beautiful new roadway. They get out of the car and they walk down this path onto that [helipad], and they can have cocktails and everything outside of the White House, and then they go into the ballroom,” he said.
