₹23 lakh salary, just ₹15,000 expenses: Why this 27-year-old PSU employee says government jobs beat private careers

India holds and celebrates a few obsessions. In the jobs and careers domain, the list undoubtedly entails NEET, JEE, UPSC, and, above all, the government job. A sarkari naukri’s prestige is unmatched. It has long implied stability, social standing, financial security, and, in many households, the ultimate definition of having “made it.”A recent post on Reddit has triggered that long-held debate once again, but with an interesting twist. A 27-year-old PSU employee claimed that his government-sector job has given him something that even some of his friends earning ₹25–30 lakh in the private sector cannot easily achieve: the ability to save almost everything he earns.

A ₹23 lakh package with remarkably low expenses

The employee claimed that his annual compensation is around ₹23 lakh and that he earns roughly ₹1.3 lakh a month. His monthly expenses, however, rarely cross ₹15,000.The reason is a combination of workplace benefits and geography.According to his account, he receives free accommodation, fuel and almost free electricity. Food at the office is also heavily subsidised. More importantly, his posting is in a tier-3 location, where opportunities to spend money are limited. It has created an unusual financial equation. While a young professional in a metropolitan city may see a substantial portion of their salary disappear into rent, commuting, eating out, and EMIs, the PSU employee says most of his income remains untouched. He claimed that he receives around ₹28,000 every month as performance-related pay, while approximately ₹14,000 is credited to his NPS account. His regular salary of around ₹1 lakh is credited later in the month. For him, the performance pay alone is reportedly enough to meet his routine expenses.

The catch is hidden in the posting

But there is a catch to this enviable savings rate. The same tier-3 posting that keeps his expenses extraordinarily low also keeps him away from the lifestyle that many young professionals actively seek. There are fewer restaurants, fewer entertainment options, fewer social opportunities and, according to him, very little to do on weekends. The nearest major urban centre can be far away.In a strange way, his location has become his financial advantage. There simply aren’t enough avenues to spend. And while that may be excellent news for his savings account, it has apparently begun affecting his professional life. Despite having enough financial freedom to travel, pursue hobbies, and enjoy himself, the employee said the lack of challenge in his job is making him feel lazy.He is now considering enrolling in a business school.

When ₹30 lakh does not necessarily mean greater wealth

The employee also compared his financial position with that of his former classmates and friends. He claimed that several classmates earn between ₹12 lakh and ₹15 lakh even years after graduation, while some of his IT friends take home packages of ₹25–30 lakh. Yet, according to him, their higher salaries do not necessarily translate into greater personal wealth because rent, EMIs, and urban living costs consume a significant portion of their income. His argument touches upon an important distinction that is often lost in salary-package conversations: income is not wealth.A person earning ₹30 lakh in an expensive city may save considerably less than someone earning ₹20–23 lakh while living in employer-provided accommodation and spending very little. The PSU employee also claimed that his job gives him access to relatively inexpensive loans, including a personal loan of up to ₹10 lakh and a home loan of around ₹50 lakh.

But is financial security enough?

The Reddit debate quickly split into two camps. Some users agreed that, from a purely financial perspective, PSU employment can offer a remarkable combination of salary, benefits, and savings. Others argued that the lifestyle associated with remote postings is a price many young Indians would not be willing to pay.And this is where the story becomes bigger than a government-versus-private-job argument.A government job can provide stability. A private-sector career can offer faster growth. A PSU posting may allow someone to build wealth rapidly. A metropolitan job may offer friendships, networking, travel, and professional exposure.None of these advantages comes without a trade-off.The 27-year-old employee appears to have solved one of the biggest problems facing young professionals: money. But he is now confronting another question: What is the point of financial freedom if the work itself stops challenging you?Perhaps that is why his post has struck such a chord.India has spent decades teaching its young people to chase secure careers. But as this employee’s experience shows, getting the job may not be the end of the journey.Sometimes, it is only when the money problem is solved that a person gets enough space to ask the harder question:What kind of life do I actually want?
