From making more phones at home to sending them overseas, India’s electronics manufacturing push has clocked up a sizeable government payout. Large-scale electronics manufacturing companies have received Rs 19,090.98 crore in incentives up to June this year, the highest among the sectors covered by the scheme, while the sector has attracted investments worth Rs 20,580.20 crore.Across the 14 PLI schemes launched in 2020, the government has disbursed a total of Rs 36,754 crore to beneficiary companies till June 30 this year, according to data from the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT).The large-scale electronics manufacturing (LSEM) scheme was introduced in 2020 to boost domestic mobile phone manufacturing. A total of 32 companies were approved as beneficiaries under the scheme.The scheme was initially meant to run for five years from 2020 to 2025, but its tenure was extended by one year to 2025-26. Smartphone exports from India increased to about $30 billion in 2025-26 from $5.5 billion in 2021-22.India has emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturer, while smartphones have become one of the country’s top exported commodities.The government launched the PLI programme for 14 sectors, including electronics and pharmaceuticals, with an approved outlay of Rs 1.91 lakh crore. The schemes were aimed at strengthening manufacturing capabilities, attracting investments, promoting exports, generating employment and reducing import dependence.Under the programme, eligible beneficiary companies receive fiscal incentives on incremental sales over the base year.Pharmaceutical companies received Rs 6,662 crore in incentives up to June this year, while beneficiary firms in food products received Rs 3,271.440 crore. The automobile and auto components sector received Rs 3,174.15 crore, the DPIIT data showed.
