Robert Downey Jr. is known around the world for his film career, but one of his newer ventures is built around something far removed from Hollywood: coffee and mental health awareness. In 2024, the actor joined entrepreneur Craig Dubitsky to launch Happy Products, a coffee brand designed to make mental health support part of an everyday routine. What makes Happy different is not simply Robert Downey Jr.’s name on the company. The brand has partnered with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and its products carry information about the organization’s mental health resources. According to Happy Products’ official website, every can, bag and box includes the NAMI helpline number, while packaging also provides a QR code that can connect consumers with support resources. How Robert Downey Jr. became part of HappyHappy was created with Craig Dubitsky, a consumer-products entrepreneur whose previous work includes brands such as Eos and Hello Products. Downey Jr. joined the venture as a co-founder, combining his long-standing love of coffee with his influence outside the film industry. When Happy launched in 2024, it was presented as more than another celebrity-backed product, with the company putting its mental health message at the heart of the brand. Its lineup included ground coffee, whole beans, instant coffee and pods, with ready-to-drink options added later. The brand says its goal is to make coffee enjoyable while giving the everyday ritual another purpose through its mental health mission. That idea also shaped the company’s packaging. Instead of treating its mental health work as a separate charitable campaign, Happy built information about support services directly into its products. Why did mental health become part of the packaging? For Happy, the partnership with NAMI is central to the company’s identity. The National Alliance on Mental Illness is a U.S. nonprofit focused on mental health education, support and advocacy.Happy’s official NAMI partnership page explains that the company gave NAMI an ownership stake and includes information about the organization’s helpline and support resources on its products. The packaging also features a QR code designed to make those resources easier to reach. The thinking is relatively simple. Coffee is already part of millions of people’s daily routines, so the company wanted its products to create an opportunity for people to come across mental health information without having to actively search for it.Happy also directs people experiencing a mental health crisis toward the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Its official FAQ states that people can call or text 988 to reach a crisis specialist. From a coffee cup to a conversationThe mental health message does not stop at the packaging. Happy says its partnership with NAMI is intended to help reduce stigma and make conversations around mental wellbeing easier. That approach is also reflected in some of the company’s other initiatives. Happy says it has supported NAMI Walks and community events and created resources intended to encourage people to recognise signs of mental health difficulties and start conversations. The company has also described work supporting women who grow coffee in Colombia. Its official site says it launched a resource and wellness group for female coffee farmers, combining business skills, emotional support and access to mental health resources. What makes Happy different from a typical celebrity brand?Celebrity-backed products are hardly unusual, but Happy’s model puts more emphasis on what happens after someone buys the product. Downey Jr.’s involvement may bring attention to the coffee, but the company has tried to attach a wider purpose to that attention. Its partnership with NAMI is built into the business rather than presented only as an occasional donation. Happy says NAMI has an ownership stake in the company, while the brand continues to place mental health resources on its products. That means the coffee itself remains the product, but the packaging becomes another way to point people toward information and support.
