Actor Walter Koenig, best known as the young Russian navigator Ensign Pavel Chekov in ‘Star Trek’, has died at the age of 90. His agent confirmed that he passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Monday.

According to the Associated Press, talent agent Zachery McGinnis said in a statement that Koenig died at his home in the North Hollywood area of Los Angeles. He was surrounded by his daughter and niece at the time.

The role that made him famous

In ‘Star Trek’, Ensign Chekov was the only member of the Enterprise bridge crew from the Communist bloc. His warm and supportive nature showed that rival nations could work together in the distant future where the show is set.Speaking English with a heavy Russian accent, Chekov showed typical Russian traits, such as strong pride, love for poetry and blind loyalty. The show aired on NBC from 1966 to 1969. It has enjoyed a rare second life, as fans, known as Trekkies, have kept it alive for decades.

Tributes from co-star and agent

Koenig’s co-star George Takei paid tribute on X. “My heart is heavy,” he wrote. “Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.”McGinnis also remembered the actor’s bond with fans. “Walter’s legacy extends far beyond the screen. Through countless convention appearances and interactions with fans, he shared his kindness, wit, and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him. He understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it,” he said. “Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before.”

A long career in science fiction

Walter Koenig played Chekov in seven ‘Star Trek’ films, beginning in 1979, and in several other spinoffs. In 1980, he also wrote a ‘Star Trek’ book titled ‘Chekov’s Enterprise’.
