It has enjoyed a rare second life, as fans, known as Trekkies, have kept it alive for decades.

Koenig’s co-star George Takei paid tribute on X. “My heart is heavy,” he wrote. “Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.”McGinnis also remembered the actor’s bond with fans. “Walter’s legacy extends far beyond the screen. Through countless convention appearances and interactions with fans, he shared his kindness, wit, and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him. He understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it,” he said. “Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before.”

A long career in science fiction

Walter Koenig played Chekov in seven ‘Star Trek’ films, beginning in 1979, and in several other spinoffs. In 1980, he also wrote a ‘Star Trek’ book titled ‘Chekov’s Enterprise’.
