Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo has described his move to Liverpool as the “ideal” decision at this stage of his career after the Uruguay defender completed a season-long loan to the Premier League club on Monday. The 27-year-old joins Liverpool for the 2026-27 season after agreeing to take a pay cut to facilitate the move. The deal also includes an option for Liverpool to sign Araujo permanently for a pre-agreed fee reportedly worth £47 million ($63 million), should his spell at Anfield prove successful.Liverpool confirmed the deal in a statement, saying the move was subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance. Araujo, who will wear the No. 33 shirt, has made more than 200 appearances for Barcelona since breaking into the first team.

‘It was the right move at the right time’

Araujo, who was appointed Barcelona captain in January, said the opportunity to join Liverpool came at the right moment in his career.“It was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. It was a move that was necessary for me to take,” Araujo told Liverpool’s official website.“As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly. I’m super happy to be here and excited to get started.”The defender also expressed his excitement at joining a club with Liverpool’s history.“I cannot wait to get started. I am very, very happy,” he said. “I am excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I am excited to meet my teammates, excited to get started playing, and I am very motivated and really up for getting going.”Araujo added: “As I say, I am super-happy to be here and excited to get started. I am glad about the interest, and it was the right move at the right time.”

Liverpool strengthen defensive options

Araujo’s arrival gives Liverpool greater depth in defence, with the Uruguay international capable of playing both at centre-back and right-back.The move comes after the departure of Ibrahima Konate at the end of his contract and amid ongoing injury concerns at right-back. Joe Gomez is also not expected to be fit for the start of the new Premier League campaign, leaving Liverpool in need of another experienced defender.Araujo brings considerable experience to the squad. He has made 213 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 14 goals, and helped the Catalan club win three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and three Spanish Super Cups.He has also earned 27 international caps for Uruguay.Having already taken part in Barcelona’s pre-season preparations, Araujo is up to speed and is expected to join Liverpool’s squad training this week.
