NEW DELHI: India’s fight against spam is getting more aggressive. Telecom operators flagged 24.4 billion calls and messages as suspected spam during April-June, while regulatory action was taken against more than 1.8 lakh telecom resources, according to data released by Trai.AI-based systems deployed by telecom operators identified 22.9 billion incoming calls and 1.4 billion SMS as suspected spam during the quarter – equivalent to about 266 million communications every day. Around 3.2% of all incoming calls were identified as suspected spam.

Trai said telecom operators have deployed AI-based systems, which analyse calling patterns to flag suspicious activity, while operators have also begun sending warnings to entities identified as likely spammers. Consumer complaints, however, continued to rise.Trai received 10.8 lakh unsolicited commercial communication (UCC) complaints during the quarter, of which 5.5 lakh were actionable. The quarterly complaint count was nearly 40% higher than the average during 2025, when nearly 31 lakh complaints were registered during the entire year. The numbers point to the complexity of India’s spam problem. While telecom operators are getting better at identifying suspicious traffic and the regulator is taking action against a growing number of offenders, this has not yet translated into fewer complaints from consumers.Nearly 89% of complaints in the latest quarter – 9.6 lakh – were filed through Trai’s DND app. Its cumulative downloads increased to 33.1 lakh by June from nearly 28 lakh at the end of 2025.Enforcement against offenders has also intensified. During the quarter, 1.3 lakh telecom resources were barred for 15 days for first violations. while another 46,786 were disconnected for a year for repeated violations. TraiI also blacklisted 263 senders and blocked 2,873 SMS headers.
