£216,000 for one child’s education: Why the cost of private schooling in the UK keeps climbing
The cost of private education in the UK is rising sharply, with a full day-school journey now costing more than £216,000 on average. Higher taxes, staffing expenses and inflation are intensifying the burden on families.

For families opting for independent education in the UK, the financial commitment is no longer confined to an annual school-fee cheque. According to research by Weatherbys Private Bank, educating one child at a private day school from Reception through Year 13 now costs an average £216,189, a 5.7% increase on last year. The figure offers a striking measure of how expensive the private-school route has become. And for parents choosing boarding education, the financial burden is considerably steeper: Weatherbys estimates the cumulative cost at £438,444 over 14 academic years, following a 6% annual increase. Day pupils at boarding schools face a total bill of about £274,061.

VAT adds another layer to rising costs

The latest increase comes against a difficult backdrop for independent schools. Since 1 January 2025, private-school education and boarding services in the UK have been subject to the standard 20% VAT rate after the Government removed their previous exemption. The pressure is not limited to taxation. Schools are also dealing with higher staffing and operating costs. That balancing act is becoming increasingly difficult. The Government’s own policy assessment acknowledged that schools could respond to VAT in different ways, including absorbing some of the cost, reducing expenditure, or raising fees.

The price could become even harder to bear

The longer-term projections are perhaps more revealing than today’s headline figure. Weatherbys estimates that a child starting Reception at a private day school this autumn could cost their family £393,492 by the time they complete A-levels in 2040, assuming annual fee inflation of 3%. For boarding education, the projected total climbs to £796,921.At the same time, the sector is already seeing fewer pupils. Department for Education figures show that the number of pupils in independent schools in England fell by 3.8% to 560,300 in 2025/26, marking a second consecutive annual decline.Yet it would be simplistic to blame the latest tax change for the entire rise. The Treasury has pointed out that private-school fees had already increased substantially over the longer term, with average charges rising 75% in real terms since 2000.The deeper story, therefore, is one of an education model caught between rising costs and changing affordability. For families in UK, private schooling is increasingly becoming a long-term financial calculation rather than simply an educational choice, and at more than £216,000 for one child, that calculation is getting harder to make.ConclusionThe rising cost of private schooling reflects a broader squeeze on families seeking premium education in Britain. With fees climbing alongside taxation, wages and operating expenses, parents are being forced to reassess what independent education is worth. As projected costs approach £400,000 for day schooling, affordability could increasingly determine who can access the sector. It will also determine the future of education in the Britain.
