Director Ram Gopal Varma has blamed the lack of accountability among directors as the reason Telugu cinema is struggling. He blames the Telugu film industry’s recurring financial crises on a severe lack of directorial accountability and poor cost control by producers.

While speaking to us, RGV explained that the core issue plaguing Tollywood is not underperforming films, but structural mismanagement during production. The ‘Satya’ filmmaker stated that many Telugu cinema financiers are merely “investors” and not actual producers.When initial production schedules fail, budgets balloon uncontrollably. Because shooting has already started, producers feel trapped and do not know where to stop spending. Varma noted that the industry actually “runs on flop movies, not the hit ones.” When a movie is a massive hit, the profits are hoarded by the lead stars and the producer. On the other hand, when a movie fails or runs over budget, that capital is actively circulating to daily-wage technicians, crew members, and suppliers.

Ram Gopal Varma compared Tollywood’s producer-driven risk model to the modern structure of Bollywood. He shared that the Hindi film industry adopted strict corporate discipline and fixed budgets following its post-pandemic box office struggles. “Why are we even calling them producers here? Basically, they aren’t producers; they’re just investors. Real producers should be actively involved in every stage of filmmaking instead of simply funding projects. Budgets often increase because films rarely go exactly as planned,” commented RGV.He said producers usually agree to an estimated budget in the beginning, but once shooting starts, it becomes difficult to stop even if expenses continue to rise. “Industry needs stronger financial discipline and greater accountability from directors if it wants to avoid recurring budget problems,” continued the director.

Ram Gopal Varma feels a more disciplined and dedicated producer-director relationship is the key to a financially feasible film industry. “Telugu or Hindi, budgets must be controlled. I know of so many projects where actors are paid a packet even though they haven’t shot, just because they were signed for a project. Financial wastage must, and can, be controlled. And the only way to do so is to have a producer who knows his job beyond his job,” he concluded.
