Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar is set to headline a new high-profile series, marking another major acting project after a prolonged absence from prominent screen roles. The yet-untitled series is being produced by a banner with which Matondkar has previously collaborated on ‘Kota Factory’ Seasons 2 and 3, as well as ‘ Hello Bachchhan.‘

Urmila Matondkar to play principal in IIT-set series

According to What’s Next on Netflix, while details about the upcoming series are being kept under wraps, the story is reportedly set in and around the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Matondkar will play the role of a principal in the series. The makers are yet to announce the rest of the cast. Production is already underway, with the series reportedly targeting a mid-2027 OTT premiere.

Divyanshu Malhotra and Puneet Batra reunite for the series

The still-untitled project is being directed by Divyanshu Malhotra, with Puneet Batra serving as the writer. The duo previously collaborated on the 2018 coming-of-age romantic drama Flames.

Urmila Matondkar’s acting comeback after more than a decade

The upcoming series adds to Urmila Matondkar’s return to acting after more than a decade away from prominent film roles. One of the most recognisable actresses of the 1990s and 2000s, Matondkar built a diverse filmography with movies including ‘Rangeela,’ ‘Satya,’ ‘Indian’, ‘Judaai,’ ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ and ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya.’Her last major lead performance came in the 2014 Marathi film ‘Ajoba’. She subsequently made a brief screen appearance in a song from Sanjay Dutt’s ‘Blackmail’ in 2018. She has also appeared on television as a judge on a dance reality show.

Urmila Matondkar’s comeback also includes Tiwari

Matondkar’s return to acting will also be seen in the revenge thriller series ‘Tiwari.’ The 14-episode series also stars JD Chakravarthy, Gauahar Khan and Rajesh Sharma in key roles.Directed by Saurabh Varma, ‘Tiwari’ follows a woman who is released from prison after spending 14 years behind bars for a crime she did not commit. Determined to uncover the truth, she sets out to track down the people responsible for framing her.The series is currently in post-production and is reportedly targeting a February 2027 release on a major streaming platform.
