Amitabh Bachchan’s Mumbai residences have long drawn attention, particularly Jalsa, where the veteran actor greets fans during his customary Sunday appearances. However, the property has a history that goes beyond its present identity. Before becoming Jalsa, the Juhu bungalow was reportedly known as Mansa, a name that has now been given to another property owned by the Bachchan family.According to a report by The Free Press Journal, the newest bungalow in the family’s property portfolio has been rechristened Mansa. The name has an interesting connection to Amitabh Bachchan’s past, as it was also associated with the property that eventually became his famous residence.
How ‘Satte Pe Satta’ led to Mansa
Mansa reportedly entered Amitabh Bachchan’s life in connection with ‘Satte Pe Satta’ (1982). Producer N. C. Sippy is said to have given the actor a bungalow measuring approximately 10,000 square feet in Juhu as remuneration for the film. Romu Sippy produced the comedy, while his younger brother, Raj Sippy, directed it.Amitabh Bachchan had previously worked with the production banner on several films. These included ‘Bombay to Goa’, directed by S. Ramanathan, and ‘Anand’ (1971), helmed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He later appeared in ‘Chupke Chupke’ and ‘Mili’, both released in 1975 and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He also had a guest appearance in the filmmaker’s ‘Guddi’ which was released in 1971.Another film from this association was ‘Alaap’ (1977), which featured Amitabh Bachchan alongside Rekha. However, the film reportedly performed poorly at the box office.
Why Amitabh Bachchan renamed the bungalow Jalsa
The property did not retain the name Mansa throughout its history. Amitabh Bachchan reportedly sold the bungalow before buying it back at a significantly higher price, following his wife Jaya Bachchan’s advice. The actor discussed the transaction in an earlier conversation with The Free Press Journal and later confirmed it during a social media interaction. The property was eventually renamed Jalsa and became one of Mumbai’s best-known celebrity addresses. The Bachchan family subsequently rebuilt the bungalow.Jalsa is closely associated with Amitabh Bachchan’s Sunday tradition, when admirers gather outside the residence to catch a glimpse of him. Fans travel from different parts of India and overseas for the occasion, making the bungalow a familiar landmark in Mumbai’s Juhu neighbourhood. The family owns several other properties in the Juhu-Vile Parle Development scheme. Janak, situated a short distance from Jalsa, reportedly serves as the family’s office and a place for entertaining guests.Ammu, another Bachchan property beside Jalsa, has a bank on its ground floor, while the first floor is residential. The family also acquired another bungalow during the 2000s. Its lawns reportedly provide space for private gatherings and recreation, while the property offers additional privacy and security.
The name Mansa returns to the family
The newest bungalow has reportedly taken the name Mansa, previously associated with the property that became Jalsa. The report described the newer residence as a place where Amitabh Bachchan can enjoy greater privacy. “Here, Mr Bachchan, who makes few public appearances these days, can stay comfortably in his bubble.”Coming to the work front, Amitabh will be next seen in ‘Kalki 2’.
