Anthropic Q3 results: Revenue soars 1,127% to $17 billion, operating loss stands at $567 million
Anthropic’s Claude AI now uses a background self-assessment system to identify potentially harmful conversations and flag them for further safety review.

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic’s revenue surged 1,127 per cent year-on-year to $17 billion in the September quarter, but the rapid expansion came with a sharp rise in computing costs, pushing the company into an operating loss.Anthropic reported an operating loss of $567 million for the three months ended September 30, compared with operating income of $974 million in the preceding quarter. Its updated registration statement, filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), showed that computing and infrastructure expenses jumped 382 per cent year-on-year to $9.9 billion, as quoted by ANI.The company attributed the pressure in part to the high cost of securing computing capacity through short-term commitments, which are more expensive than longer-term arrangements. It said it continues to face constraints in meeting demand.“We have consistently operated in a compute-constrained environment where customer demand exceeds available compute,” Anthropic said in the filing. The September-quarter operating loss also included around $2 billion in non-cash expenses linked to a donation-matching programme. On an adjusted basis, operating income stood at $2.5 billion, compared with $2.2 billion in the June quarter. Adjusted operating margin, however, narrowed to 15 per cent from 19 per cent.Anthropic expects its reliance on more expensive short-term computing arrangements to continue in the near term. “We expect our use of short-term compute to continue to increase in the near term,” it said, indicating that margins could remain under pressure as the company scales up to meet demand. For the first nine months of 2026, revenue reached $33.2 billion, against $2.5 billion in the corresponding period last year. Operating loss narrowed to $1.3 billion from $5.2 billion. The company reported a net loss of $23.3 billion for the September quarter and $104 billion for the first nine months of the year. Much of the nine-month loss was driven by a $94.3 billion non-cash charge arising from changes in the fair value of convertible notes and other financial instruments, primarily reflecting an increase in their valuation.Anthropic’s aggregate commitments to purchase and lease computing capacity stood at $895.4 billion, of which $447.5 billion is expected to fall due before December 2030. The scale of these obligations underscores the capital-intensive nature of building and operating advanced AI systems.Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic is seeking to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol ANT. The filing does not yet specify the number of shares to be offered or the price range. The proposed offering will include newly issued shares as well as shares held by existing shareholders.
