Ashutosh Ranka’s education journey: From IIT Kanpur and LSE to becoming the CJP Co-convener

For many students, education is not just about earning degrees—it is about building perspectives, developing leadership skills and understanding the world beyond classrooms. Ashutosh Ranka’s academic journey reflects this combination of technical knowledge, public policy learning and student leadership. Before becoming known for his role as a youth activist and strategist associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Ranka built a strong academic foundation through two globally recognised institutions—Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).His educational path, from engineering at one of India’s premier institutes to public administration at one of the world’s leading social science universities, highlights how diverse academic experiences can shape careers beyond traditional professions.

Early education in Jaipur

Ashutosh Ranka completed his schooling at Maheshwari Public School in Jaipur, where he studied from 2001 to 2013.During his school years, he developed an interest in academics along with extracurricular activities, laying the foundation for his future involvement in leadership and public-oriented roles.Like many students aspiring for a career in science and technology, Ranka prepared for engineering entrance examinations and eventually secured admission to one of India’s most prestigious institutions.

Engineering years at IIT Kanpur

Ranka joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 2013, pursuing a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Materials Science and Engineering. His four years at IIT Kanpur were not limited to academic learning. Alongside studying engineering concepts, he became actively involved in campus affairs and student representation.During his undergraduate years, he served as the President of the Students’ Gymkhana, one of the most significant student leadership positions at IIT Kanpur. The role gave him experience in organising student initiatives, understanding diverse viewpoints and managing responsibilities involving a large student community. For many IIT students, campus leadership becomes a training ground for communication, problem-solving and decision-making—skills that often prove valuable in professional life.

From engineering to public policy at LSE

After completing his B.Tech from IIT Kanpur in 2017, Ranka moved towards understanding governance, administration and policy-making.He pursued a Master of Public Administration (MPA) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) from 2020 to 2022.Unlike his engineering education, which focused on technology and materials science, the MPA programme introduced him to public policy, administration and institutional decision-making.During his time at LSE, Ranka participated in policy-oriented projects and contributed as a Contributing Editor for the Policy Sphere Journal, gaining exposure to discussions around governance and social issues. The transition from engineering to public administration reflected an interest in combining analytical skills with broader societal challenges.

How his education influenced his career choices

After completing his studies, Ranka worked with McKinsey & Company in London as a management consultant. His academic background—combining engineering, analytical thinking and public administration—aligned with consulting work that requires structured problem-solving and strategic decision-making.However, he later moved away from a corporate career and became involved in youth activism and education-related advocacy. His supporters often point to his IIT and LSE education as influences behind his structured approach to organising campaigns, analysing issues and communicating policy concerns.

Lessons for students from Ashutosh Ranka’s academic journey

Ranka’s educational journey offers several takeaways for students:1. Degrees can open multiple career paths: An engineering degree does not restrict a person to technology careers. Skills gained through technical education can also support careers in policy, leadership and social impact.2. Campus leadership builds real-world skills: Student positions often provide early opportunities to develop communication, teamwork and decision-making abilities.3. Interdisciplinary learning matters: The combination of engineering and public administration demonstrates how different fields can complement each other.4. Education is a continuous journey: Moving from IIT Kanpur to LSE shows how expanding one’s knowledge base can create opportunities in new domains.

A journey beyond classrooms

Ashutosh Ranka’s educational background represents a blend of technology, leadership and public policy. From classrooms at IIT Kanpur to policy discussions at LSE, his academic experiences shaped a foundation that later influenced his professional and public roles. For students navigating career choices today, his journey highlights an important message: education is not only about choosing a degree—it is about developing the skills, curiosity and perspective needed to create impact in the future.
