Bank customers planning to visit branches this week may need to reschedule their plans as several bank closures are lined up between September 28 and October 4. Lenders across the country will observe a three-day nationwide strike as well as a major national holiday during the week, potentially disrupting over-the-counter banking services in several states.Bank holidays can also vary depending on the region. While some closures apply nationwide, the exact list of holidays applicable to a particular branch may differ. Customers are therefore advised to check with their local branch or consult the RBI’s state-wise banking holiday calendar before heading out.
Where and when will banks remain shut this week:
September 28 to September 30The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for a nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30. The union forum has said bank operations could be disrupted across the country during the three-day strike.October 2The next major closure is on October 2, when banks nationwide will remain shut for Gandhi Jayanti, marking the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. As a national holiday, the closure will apply uniformly across all states and union territories.
What about your banking activities?
A bank holiday or branch closure does not mean that all banking services will stop. Digital and online banking facilities, including net banking, UPI, mobile banking apps and ATMs, will continue to function normally, allowing customers to carry out essential transactions.Customers who need services that require a physical branch visit, however, may have to plan accordingly. Cheque clearances, cash deposits, in-person KYC formalities, document submission, verification and certain account-related requests may have to wait until the branch reopens.For most routine transactions, customers can continue using ATMs, UPI, internet banking and mobile banking even when physical branches are closed. However, transactions and services that specifically require branch visits will only be available once the concerned branch resumes operations.The RBI publishes a comprehensive state-wise holiday list at the beginning of every year. Account holders are encouraged to check the calendar regularly because bank holidays may differ from general state government holidays and the closure schedules followed by public offices.
