Billy Crystal finds hope after losing his home in LA fires.

Billy Crystal is drawing on humor and family memories to cope with the loss of his Pacific Palisades home in the January 2025 wildfires. The actor found a small reminder of resilience among the ruins: a garden rock engraved with the word “Laughter.” The discovery has become a central part of his outlook as he prepares to bring his personal experiences to the stage.Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, returned to their neighborhood about a week after the fires destroyed their home. They had purchased the 1930s ranch-style house in 1979 and raised their daughters, Jenny and Lindsay, there. The property, which held decades of family memories, was reduced to rubble.Speaking to PEOPLE, Billy Crystal described the devastation he witnessed during the visit. “All you could see were skeletons of trees and chimneys, the ones that hadn’t fallen, stuff blowing in the streets, nobody around,” he said. “It was like an episode of The Walking Dead, like this thing had just come through and wiped out everything.”

Billy Crystal finds ‘Laughter’ among the ruins

As the family surveyed the destruction, Lindsay discovered a rock from their garden that had survived the blaze. The word “Laughter” was engraved on it, carrying a personal significance for Billy Crystal. He connected the message to his childhood and the death of his father when he was 15.“That’s what’s gotten me through tough times starting when I was 15 when my father died,” Crystal said. He recalled supporting his grieving mother as she rebuilt her life after the loss.“When I was 15, being there with a grieving mother and watching her put her life back together at 49, my job was to keep her laughing. That word made my life possible. So the fact that was the first thing [we found], we’ll be okay.”

New show ‘860’ helps Billy Crystal process grief

It combines the comedian’s personal memories with moments from his life and career.Creating the show became a way for Billy Crystal to process the destruction rather than simply recount it. “It wasn’t just, ‘Oh, I’m going to make a play out of this,’ ” he said. “No, it was healing me at the same time.”

Billy Crystal on his father’s death

Billy Crystal previously explored his father’s death in ‘700 Sundays’, the Tony-winning stage show about his childhood on Long Island. However, he says the grief surrounding his home’s destruction remains immediate.“The pain of those moments was a little further removed,” he said. “This is still fresh and still ongoing.”Humor has remained a defining part of Billy Crystal’s career, from his breakthrough role in the television series ‘Soap’ in 1977 to ‘When Harry Met Sally . . .’. Billy Crystal and Janice intend to rebuild their Pacific Palisades property. However, the actor says ‘860’ is about more than losing a house.“It’s not just about our home. This is a story about resilience, about family, about laughing, loving, support, moving forward, facing things you never thought were possible and coming to grips with it. And then turning it into something that feels beautiful to do every time I do it.”

Rob Reiner encouraged Billy Crystal’s new production

Billy Crystal also recalled his friendship with filmmaker Rob Reiner, whom he described as “the friend of a lifetime.” Rob Reiner encouraged him while he developed the show. When Reiner eventually called, he told Crystal, “I always knew it was you.”Billy Crystal joked that he did not like the screenplay after someone had secretly passed it to him. The exchange ended with Rob Reiner saying, “We’ll start tomorrow.” Asked who else had been considered, Crystal named Albert Brooks, Tom Hanks and Michael Keaton. The actor is now preparing to share his experiences through ‘860’, using comedy to address loss while holding on to the memories and relationships that continue to sustain him. On the other hand, Billy Crystal’s last film is ‘Here Today’, which was released in 2021.
