NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the Indian contingent for its impressive campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, praising the athletes for their determination, dedication and skill after the country finished fourth in the medals table with 39 medals.Taking to X after the conclusion of the 11-day sporting extravaganza, the Prime Minister lauded India’s medal winners and said their performances would inspire the next generation of athletes.“Proud of our contingent’s performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Delighted that India has won 39 medals, including 13 Golds. Congrats to the medal winners,” PM Modi posted.He also acknowledged the commitment shown by the athletes throughout the Games.“Throughout the Games, our talented athletes have displayed exceptional skill, determination and dedication. Their hard work will keep inspiring our youngsters,” he added.The Prime Minister concluded his message by wishing the contingent success in future competitions.“My best wishes to the entire Indian contingent for the endeavours ahead. May they continue to give their very best and bring further glory to the nation. #CWG2026.”
India signs off with memorable Glasgow campaign
PM Modi’s message came a day after India wrapped up another successful Commonwealth Games campaign, securing 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals, to finish fourth behind Australia, England and Canada.Although India’s tally was lower than the 61 medals won at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022, the numbers only tell part of the story.The Glasgow programme featured significantly fewer sports, with disciplines such as shooting, wrestling, badminton, hockey and table tennis omitted. In fact, 30 of India’s medals in Birmingham had come from sports that were not part of the 2026 Games.Despite travelling with a contingent of just 122 athletes compared to 210 four years ago, India maintained its fourth-place finish while producing an impressive medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with at least one medal.Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh emerged as India’s only double medallist, creating history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 5,000m after earlier claiming silver in the 10,000m.India also excelled in boxing, athletics, para sports, judo and weightlifting, underlining the country’s growing depth across multiple disciplines.
Focus shifts to Ahmedabad 2030
The Glasgow Games concluded with an emotional closing ceremony that officially passed the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the landmark centenary edition in Ahmedabad in 2030.Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi received the Commonwealth Games flag on behalf of India during the formal handover ceremony.Ahmedabad will become only the second Indian city to host the Commonwealth Games after New Delhi in 2010.
