Stock market holiday today

Investors will have a break from domestic equity trading on Friday as the stock market remains closed for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. October 2, 2026, is listed as a full trading holiday in the 2026 market calendar, with both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) shut for regular trading.As a result, investors will not be able to buy or sell shares on the two exchanges during the regular session on Friday. Trading in equity derivatives will also remain closed.The trading holiday comes after a weak session on Thursday, when the benchmark Sensex and Nifty extended their losing run to four sessions. Persistent foreign fund selling, elevated bond yields and a fresh rise in crude oil prices weighed on market sentiment during the session.

Sensex, Nifty ended lower before holiday

Thursday’s session saw another decline at the Dalal Street, with both benchmark indices falling for the fourth consecutive day.BSE Sensex ended 570.59 points, or 0.79 per cent, lower at 71,909.70. The index had come under heavier pressure during the session, falling 1,187.41 points, or 1.63 per cent, to 71,292.88.NSE Nifty50 closed at 22,421.95 after losing 198.50 points, or 0.88 per cent.Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Steel, Adani Ports, ITC, Power Grid, Hindustan Unilever and Eternal were among the major laggards on the Sensex. Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Tech and HDFC Bank were among the stocks that gained.
