As Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 approaches, Vijay Deverakonda has joined the growing call for environmentally responsible celebrations. The actor has brought home a seed Ganesha idol and urged devotees to opt for eco-friendly clay idols instead of Plaster of Paris (PoP) alternatives. Vijay’s initiative comes as celebrities and environmental campaigns continue to encourage sustainable ways of celebrating the festival and reducing the impact of idol immersion on water bodies.

Vijay Deverakonda joins Green Ganpati celebration challenge

Vijay has joined Chiranjeevi and Pooja Hegde in the Green Ganpati celebration challenge, calling on devotees to make greener choices this Ganesh Chaturthi. The actor encouraged people to choose naturally made clay idols over PoP idols, particularly in view of the environmental concerns associated with visarjan. While natural clay can break down more easily in water, PoP takes considerably longer to dissolve. Synthetic paints and chemical dyes used on some idols can also contribute to water contamination and affect aquatic life. Vijay’s message has therefore brought renewed attention to the importance of choosing sustainable materials while keeping the spirit of the festival intact.

Vijay Deverakonda brings home seed Ganesha idol

Ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, which falls on Monday, September 14, 2026, Vijay brought home a seed Ganesha idol and placed the eco-friendly figure in a natural pot at his residence. The actor urged fellow devotees to consider similar eco-friendly idols as a way of reducing pollution caused by traditional immersion practices. He also thanked the organisers of the Green India Challenge for spearheading the initiative. As part of the campaign, the organisation has been encouraging households, temples, public pandals and housing societies to choose clay and seed Ganpati idols. Devotees are also being encouraged to consider immersing the idols at home rather than in natural water bodies.

Why seed and clay Ganesha idols are being encouraged?

Ganesh Chaturthi traditionally involves bringing an idol of Lord Ganesha home or installing one at a community pandal, followed by visarjan at the end of the celebrations. However, concerns over the environmental impact of PoP idols and synthetic colours have led to increasing calls for alternatives made from natural clay and other biodegradable materials. Seed Ganesha idols take the idea a step further by allowing devotees to grow a plant after the festival, combining tradition with an eco-conscious approach.

Vijay Deverakonda’s work front
