GST collections jump 14.8% to Rs 1.99 lakh crore in August

NEW DELHI: The gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue rose 14.8 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,99,853 crore in August 2026, according to provisional government data released on Tuesday.Net GST revenue for the month, after refunds, increased 8.3 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,68,057 crore from Rs 1,55,181 crore a year ago.The rise in gross collections was driven by both domestic transactions and imports. Gross revenue from domestic transactions grew 9.3 per cent to Rs 1,37,249 crore in August, compared with Rs 1,25,570 crore in the same month last year.Revenue from imports saw a sharper increase, rising 29 per cent to Rs 62,604 crore from Rs 48,546 crore a year earlier.Abhishek Jain, Partner and National Head, Indirect Tax – KPMG in India, said, “A strong 14.8% growth in overall GST collections have added to the cheer of 7.8% growth in GDP in Q1. This collectively shows the robustness of the Indian economy despite geo-political conflicts and global economic uncertainty”The Central GST collection stood at Rs 38,413 crore, while State GST collections were Rs 46,316 crore, while integrated GST collections from domestic transactions stood at Rs 52,520 crore.Refunds, meanwhile, surged 67.9 per cent year-on-year to Rs 31,795 crore in August. Domestic refunds rose 72.6 per cent to Rs 18,490 crore, while export refunds processed through ICEGATE increased 61.8% to Rs 13,305 crore.After accounting for refunds, net domestic GST revenue grew 3.4 per cent to Rs 1,18,759 crore, while net customs revenue rose 22.3 per cent to Rs 49,299 crore.On a cumulative basis, gross GST revenue during the year so far has risen 11 per cent to Rs 10,42,757 crore in the corresponding period last year. Net GST revenue has increased 9% to Rs 8,89,523 crore from Rs 8,15,939 crore.The GST Council is scheduled to hold its 57th meeting in New Delhi on September 12, according to an office memorandum issued by the GST Council Secretariat. The meeting will begin at 11 am, while an officers’ meeting will be held a day earlier on September 11.
