Gulveer Singh created history on Saturday by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 5000m and the first Indian track and field athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Games.After winning silver in the 10,000m on July 28, the reigning Asian champion added a bronze in the 5000m, finishing in 13:24.95 on the final day of the athletics competition.Kenya’s Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang won the gold in 13:23.61, while Australia’s Ky Robinson, who had earlier taken the 10,000m gold, claimed silver in 13:24.70.The 28-year-old Indian, who holds the national records in both the 5000m and 10,000m, finished well outside his season’s best time of 13:03.93. His timing on Saturday was also slower than his national record of 12:59.77.Gulveer stayed with the leading group throughout the race before making his move in the final lap. He edged Kenya’s Cornelius Kemboi to the bronze medal by just 0.04 seconds.Kemboi, who had clocked 12:56.02 in June and is a sub-13-minute runner, finished just behind Gulveer in the race.The bronze added to Gulveer’s growing list of achievements, which also includes the 10,000m bronze medal he won at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
