Solving the square root of a four-digit number can take time, even for students comfortable with mathematics. Now imagine calculating the square roots of 100 such numbers and writing every answer by hand in less than two minutes. A teenager from Gujarat has achieved exactly that, completing the task in just 1 minute and 39 seconds using the abacus technique.Ayan Mohsin Vahora, from Anand, Gujarat, has secured a record for the fastest time taken by a teenager to solve the square roots of 100 four-digit numbers. The achievement was confirmed on July 28, 2026, when he was 14 years, six months and 18 days old. What makes the feat particularly interesting is that he did not simply calculate the answers mentally. He also wrote each one on a sheet of paper using a ballpoint pen, completing all 100 calculations within the recorded time.

How Ayan completed 100 calculations in 99 seconds

According to the record details, Ayan was presented with 100 four-digit numbers and had to calculate their square roots and write down the answers correctly. He completed the entire exercise in 99 seconds. The task required him to combine quick calculation with accuracy and the ability to record each answer without losing time. At an average of less than a second per calculation, the performance demanded considerable concentration.Ayan used the abacus technique, a method of arithmetic training that helps learners perform calculations by visualising the movement of beads on an abacus. With practice, students learn to imagine the instrument in their minds and use those mental movements to work with numbers.

Training at UCMAS helped develop his calculation skills

Ayan trained at the UCMAS centre in Anand. UCMAS, or Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System, uses abacus-based learning to develop mental arithmetic skills. In the method, learners initially work with a physical abacus to understand how numbers are represented and calculations are performed. As they become more familiar with the process, they are encouraged to visualise the abacus and carry out calculations mentally. The technique involves more than memorising number combinations. Learners need to develop speed, concentration and the ability to retain and manipulate numerical information. Regular practice is central to building these skills.Ayan’s record brought together these abilities in a timed exercise that required him to calculate and write down 100 answers accurately.

A record at 14 puts the spotlight on mental arithmetic

Ayan’s achievement highlights how structured practice can help young learners approach mathematics in different ways. While classroom mathematics often focuses on formulas and written methods, abacus-based training offers another approach to developing numerical fluency. For students who find calculations challenging, such methods can also make number work more engaging by turning arithmetic into a skill that can be practised and improved over time.
