NEW DELHI: India continued their batting revolution in T20 Internationals on Saturday, matching their own world record for the most 200-plus totals in a calendar year after piling up 219/5 against Zimbabwe in the second T20I.The 219-run effort was India’s ninth 200-plus total in T20Is in 2026, drawing level with the record they had set in 2024. No other full-member nation has managed more than six such totals in a single calendar year, underlining India’s sustained dominance with the bat in the shortest format.More remarkably, India have now crossed the 200-run mark 52 times in T20Is, extending their all-time record. The next-best side, South Africa, has managed the feat only 29 times, highlighting the gulf between India and the rest of the cricketing world when it comes to consistently posting mammoth totals.

India’s remarkable consistency is reflected in the all-time list of most 200-plus totals in a calendar year. They first set the benchmark with nine such scores in 2024 and have now equalled it in 2026. India also produced seven 200-plus totals in 2023, meaning they occupy three of the top five spots on the list. Most 200-plus totals in a calendar year (T20Is):

  • 9 – India (2024)
  • 9 – India (2026)
  • 7 – India (2023)
  • 7 – Japan (2024)
  • 7 – Austria (2025)
  • 6 – England (2022)
  • 6 – South Africa (2022)
  • 6 – West Indies (2024)

The latest milestone came despite India stumbling to 29/2 after being asked to bat first.

Kishan, Tilak rescue India after early wobble

Zimbabwe struck twice inside the powerplay as Abhishek Sharma and the in-form Vaibhav Sooryavanshi departed cheaply.Abhishek offered a simple catch to Ryan Burl off Blessing Muzarabani, while Sooryavanshi, after racing to 20 off just nine deliveries with four boundaries and a six, miscued a Richard Ngarava bouncer to mid-on.With India under pressure, Ishan Kishan and skipper Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings through a composed 66-run partnership for the third wicket.Kishan then found an ideal ally in Tilak Varma as the pair added 94 runs to completely wrest control away from Zimbabwe.Kishan struck a superb 81, perfectly pacing his innings. He reached his half-century in 31 balls before accelerating spectacularly, smashing 31 more runs in just 13 deliveries. His leg-side strokeplay proved particularly destructive, with Zimbabwe’s bowlers repeatedly punished through the mid-wicket region.Tilak complemented him brilliantly with an unbeaten 60 off just 29 balls, silencing recent discussions over his strike rate. The left-hander raced to his fifty in only 23 deliveries, mixing elegant placement with clean power hitting. The duo powered India to 61 runs in the final five overs, lifting the visitors to an imposing 219/5.Speaking during the innings break, Tilak credited Kishan for setting the tone.“We felt anything around 200 would be a really good score here. But when you think about 200, obviously the score can go to 220, especially the way Ishan batted. It was tremendous to watch,” Tilak said. The 23-year-old also revealed that conversations with head coaches Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman had prompted him to focus on scoring more through the ground rather than relying solely on aerial shots.“I’ve been talking with Gautam sir and now with Laxman sir about finding the gaps. If you hit through the ground, your consistency improves. I worked really hard during the break after the England series, and I’m happy it came through today,” he added. With another 200-plus total added to an ever-growing collection, India’s batting unit continues to redefine T20I standards.
