PM Modi Announces IIM Bangalore's First Overseas Campus In Indonesia's Malang Region

India has announced plans to establish an IIM Bangalore campus in Indonesia, extending the global reach of its premier management institutions. The initiative, unveiled during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, forms part of wider agreements on technology, innovation and space cooperation, and is expected to strengthen academic collaboration while benefiting students from Indonesia and the wider ASEAN region.

India is taking another step towards expanding the global presence of its higher education institutions. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia, the two countries announced a series of agreements covering education, technology, innovation, and space, with the decision to establish a campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore in Indonesia emerging as one of the most significant outcomes. The proposed campus is expected to cater not only to students in Indonesia but also to learners from across the ASEAN region.

IIM Bangalore to expand its presence overseas

Prime Minister Modi announced the initiative after holding bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Tuesday. The proposed campus is expected to create new opportunities for students seeking internationally recognised management education while strengthening academic links between India and Southeast Asia. For IIM Bangalore, the project marks an important international expansion. For India, it adds another chapter to its efforts to take its top educational institutions to global audiences.

Technology and innovation feature prominently in bilateral talks

Education was only one part of a wider agenda agreed upon by the two leaders. India and Indonesia signed agreements to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), telecommunications, digital public infrastructure and startup development. Both countries also agreed to encourage greater collaboration among young innovators, entrepreneurs and technology professionals. The agreements indicate that the partnership is increasingly focusing on sectors expected to shape future economic growth.

Cooperation in space set to grow

The discussions also produced fresh commitments in the space sector. India and Indonesia agreed to work together through joint research, technology sharing and capacity-building initiatives. The two countries have maintained cooperation in space for years, and the latest agreement is expected to broaden that partnership by encouraging greater scientific and technical collaboration.

Part of a larger international expansion of Indian institutions

The Indonesia campus follows the overseas expansion of IIM Ahmedabad, which became the first Indian Institute of Management to establish a full-fledged international campus. Its Dubai campus, inaugurated in September last year, currently offers a one-year full-time MBA programme for experienced professionals. The project was widely seen as the beginning of India’s push to take its premier management institutions beyond the country’s borders. The proposed IIM Bangalore campus suggests that overseas campuses are becoming an important part of India’s higher education strategy.

Education takes centre stage in regional engagement

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Indonesia marked the first stop of his three-nation tour, which will also include Australia and New Zealand. While the visit covered a wide range of strategic issues, the decision to establish an IIM Bangalore campus stands out for its long-term significance. It has the potential to strengthen educational exchanges, promote collaboration between institutions, and provide students across Southeast Asia with greater access to Indian management education. As India seeks a larger role in the global education landscape, projects such as the proposed Indonesia campus are likely to play an increasingly important role in building lasting academic partnerships across the region.
